Thief
What do you think about this Character Class in the Dungeon & Dragons or (AD&D) system of role-playing? Consider the following:
1. Fighting ability (attack skills, use of weapons)
2. Unique skills (thievery, bless, talk to animals, etc.)
3. Magical skills (ability to use and acquire magic)
4. Tendency to progress (easy to go up in levels)
5. Limitations (cannot carry or use certain objects)
I never did understand the passion to be a Thief. I have seen many players rush to be this character to the point that almost everyone is a Thief. For one you have to be 'bad' from the beginning, unless you plan to have the Robin Hood role, and even then you would still have to take from one to give to the other.
Regardless of that Thieves are always the most likely to die, because their combat performance is usually poor and they are always the ones sent to get the traps disarmed. The element of hide in shadows is good, but if you are in an open field you are basically in trouble.
I enjoy playing thieves. I don't play them to steal everything though, I use them more as a swashbuckler type of character, use different types of weapons, and more charismatic. Their skills are somewhat useful in certain situations, and besides, you can absolutely no sense of personal possession and still have fun. It is all in how you play the character, not the skills that they possess that determine whether or not you are successful playing a thief.
I enjoy the myriad of skills the the thief enjoys. I like playing a smooth character. Someone who can blend in anywhere and can more times than not talk himself out of a beating. The thief does have poor combat skill this though is the reason we have our big, less than brilliant friends around. You also can't say anything bad about the backstab ability. While I don't make it a point to steal everything in sight sometimes the need strikes. Evil you say well...evil is such a harsh term.

The thief is certainly an enjoyable class to play and has a large following. They play key roles in partys, a necessity for most adventures, and are one of the most appreciated characters in the group.
They have the best and widest skill set of any class, capable at a myriad of skills others would just love to have. They are also the stealthiest character which can be very effective when utilising it with the back stab ability.

What do you think about this Character Class in the Dungeon & Dragons or (AD&D) system of role-playing? Consider the following:
1. Fighting ability - Thiefs are not close combat masters. They have little health and a fairly poor BAB, against a warrior in a straight up fight the battle would not last long. They are however stealthiest character which can be very effective when utilising it with the back stab ability.
2. Unique skills - They have the best and widest skill set of any class, capable at a myriad of skills others would just love to have. Invariably means they are always a out front scouting for the group and dealing with most of the tricky elements in a dungeon
3. Magical skills - They can use a wide range of class specific magic items
4. Tendency to progress - In a group good progress, on the own very slow
5. Limitations (cannot carry or use certain objects) - Poor close combat perfomance means that have serious props when on their own
The thief is really in a class in its own, but not really for the better. They have a unique skill set and great range of abilities making them fun to play, they invariably get to do a lot of the actions and a highly appreciated. But as JB noted they have the lowest survival rate of any class, because of their physical weakness and heavy workload. Finally I find that in the case of thiefs' the ability to stealth seems to be used more to hide with then to move into a good strike position, great stealth ability's and weak constitution means that thiefs can be relied upon almost as much to flee battle as go into it
I personally do not like playing a thief but at the same time I think they are very essential for any group especially in a dungeon scenario. Coming to think of it we don't have a thief in our current adventure *bites nails*.
