Biggest Chess Board
What size was the Biggest Chess Board you have ever played on or seen?
Oh this brings back some memories. When I lived in Germany, there was a life sized chess board in the park. One day, while I was at the park with my father, there was an event going on. A bunch of people were wanting to play life sized chess. I got to be a pawn. That was just so cool. Each move was the result of long (sometimes heated) debate. Trust me, chess is much harder to play when you can't look down at the board.
The largest board I have ever seen was nearly 7 feet across. I did not get the privilege of playing on it. It was a pedestal table about 1.5 feet high, solid oak. The pieces were between 11 inches and 18 inches tall. It was very unique. A former client of mine had this for a center piece in his living area.
The largest board I have played on was about 4 feet across with pieces that stood 7 inches to 13 inches tall. The table was a green tempered glass (ethced) and the pieces were some type of bamboo or something, they were extremely light. This was very unique. I watched it sell in an antique auction just a few days after I played on it and it sold for over 1400$ US. I so wish I could have added it to my collection.
On discovery channel I once saw a huge life size chess game on a large 25 foot chess board. Two large stands were built for the opponent to look down on the board while they yelled out directions to the pieces through megaphones. I don't know the actual size, but it was big enough for real adults to be on it with space in between.
