What do you know about the Socio-Economic conditions of the island of Guadalupe / Guadeloupe?

When I think of Guadalupe, I think of sharks, Great White Sharks to be exact. I had a friend who lived in San Diego who went "swimming with the sharks" every summer. He loved heading down south to see them and photograph them. He used to have his own site, but it doesn't appear to be up any more. However, the island is still one of the best places to see Great Whites up close. Here is a good site with lots of pics taken from the island by shark swimmers.
