Comments: Are speedos on men immodest? What do you think?

I suspect that most LDS people living in the U.S. View men wearing speedos as immodest. (I would be interested to know European and/or Brazilian LDS people's views of men's speedos.) Why is this so?

Why are speedos on men immodest or considered "Gross" But form fitting swimwear on women is "Acceptable"? Women also have bulges. Most women's swimwear is form fitting next to their breasts and genitals. I have read comments that say they are "Gross" Or "Ewee" Or "Indecent." Is there an aversion to the male form? What are we teaching our children?

I think our culture has an unfair double standard.

I prefer wearing a speedo brief to a trunk swimming suit for the following reasons:
1. I do not get as cold due to my low body fat and that a speedo retains so much less water.
2. I chafe less.
3. I can swim and move in and out of the water so much easier because speedo briefs drag so much less water and air.

Men can wear a speedo brief without being gay or seeking to attract attention.

I encourage everyone to compare swimming and getting in and out of the water in a form fitting swimming suit (Speedo brief) to a trunk style suit.

I do not view a men's speedo brief any differently than a traditional women's swimsuit (One piece or two piece). The men's speedo and the women's suit can both be worn without unnecessarily outlining breasts and genitals while covering bulges.

I appreciate being able to voice my opinion in this forum. I am interested to hear and understand other points of view from other LDS in the U.S. And throughtout the world.

We are teaching children then need to watch what they wear. Both for Men and Woman. That we do need to have some standard.

I am going to assume you swim WAY more then me. Being cold while I was swimming was never a reason for me to pick a swimming suit.

How much are we talking about? 1 Degree, 2 degrees?

Again never a problem for me.

You can move faster in the air? So you can actually walk faster with so much less drag? Wow I should wear one all the time!

Again, what are we talking about. 2mph? 4kph? I'm guessing this important for somebody that swims, but for somebody that is going to pool for a fun of it, do you really see them wearing a speedo?

Maybe this could be the problem. Most men that I see where a speedo (and that list is not very long) I don't see this being any concern.

But then again, maybe I should just get one of those Full body speedo's (or the ones maid by Speedo) those are suppose to help even more aren't they?

I wouldn't encourage my sons to wear one. I don't think that area of the human body needs to be emphasized by either male or female!

Really, I never thought about it maybe because I do not see a problem with them, specially for professional swimmers.

Comments: Depends on the location and the activity. For competitive swimming and practices, no problem. For lap swimming for fitness, maybe still okay, but a square cut or jammers would give you the streamlined comfort with a little more coverage. For recreational swimming at the pool, the beach, the water park, etc. They are immodest and inappropriate.

Sorry to say so, but your reasons sound mostly like self-justification. I can sympathize, since I frankly love the comfort and support of Speedo-type briefs and would wear them for all water activities if modesty were no issue, but it is.

Comments: Maybe double standard provincial thinkers should take all the free agency away from everyone on this planet. Republicans seem to think they are exclusive to being the "choosen."

I don't get how Republicans get into a topic about speedos, however what you do is up to you, that's your free agency. What you do not have free agency over is how others react to it. I always let my children know that many of their choices don't affect just them but many others around them.

I suppose speedos have there place, but the ick factor on most people's bodies is too high.

I just wonder: Is there somewhere in LDS doctrine , that prohibits someone from wearing something strictly on the shear pain it causes to the eyes and psyches of the observers?
