This really depends on how hard a drinker you are. If you are so bad that you develop sorosis of the liver then you may not recover and can even die. My father was like this, he developed one complication after the other and just would not stop drinking. If you quit in time then there is hope. It can be a life long battle, but you can become whole again.
I agree with JB's statement. It really depends on the length of time you drink. If you stop before you destroy your liver, then I think recovery is more likely. But if you drink so heavily and so long that your liver starts shutting down, then you will die from it. Problem is that there is no way for you to know what your limit is, how long and how heavily you can drink. Its best not to take the chance, because once you cross that limit, you cannot go back.
