Taking People At Face Value
Is taking people at face value considered being very open minded or very naive?

Trust but verify |
To mistrust till you verify is not being fair to most people. Yeah you may get hurt now and then but it is those hurts that help you grow so you can verify a dishonest person quicker. If you mistrust everyone you meet you will be losing out on knowing some very wonderful people. That is my opinion.
I believe we all have some caution (probably a better word than mistrust) when we meet new people. I am sure that most of us would not trust our children to a person that we just met no matter how honest they looked. There is a trust building phase to friendships. The key is how interested you are into making more/new friends.
If you instantly distrust everyone, then no one will gain the opportunities to build trust to become a friend. If you trust everyone equally (friends and new acquaintences), then you are in for a great deal of heartache as there will be many to let you down.

Comments: You can be open minded without being naive. I see everyone like a blank sheet of paper, only when they do or say something stupid does that paper start to show all the blotches. I don't have any particular thoughts about a person's face value until they start painting their true colors on the paper.
I tend not to judge as I believe that to be accepted as the person you are, you need to learn to accept others as the way they are. Their preferences and thoughts are due to the their surroundings as ours are the same.
Other than that, I tend to give a certain percentage of trust to everyone I meet. And in a way, giving them the option to gain the additional trust or lose it all.
Its better being fair to others if you want to be treated fairly.
