I have to agree with this. They say that cigarette smoking is a choice that you can make as an adult. I grew up with my dad smoking all the time. I know all that second hand smoke did effect us as kids. My older brother had cancer before he was 18. Luckily he was in the military and they took real good care of him. I see cars with little kids in them and the parent smoking. I feel sorry for these kids for they do not know what their parent is doing to them. I wanted all my kids to grow up in a smoke free home. My x-wife married a smoker and now my eldest daughter smokes. I think it was living in the same house as a smoker and the second hand smoke that got her to smoke. I hope that she learns and quits soon.
People need to stop being so selfish. Smoking around children is sure to have negative effects on their health. They may not get cancer but why take that risk? More kids are getting asthma every day and suffering from other health problems. Smoking in a car with children should be illegal, because it is not good parenting. Hopefully some changes in laws will help people to realize the things they are doing wrong. Sometimes the government has to step in when people are making unwise decisions that hurt others.
How could people subject their own children to the effects of second hand smoking? Once I saw a documentary regarding the effects that smoking can have on someone's lungs and arteries. The content was really graphic. Maybe instead of advertising cigarettes with menthol or cigarettes with filters, graphic depictions of what can happen to human tissues, arteries and lungs should be publicized using the mass and electronic media (such as the build up of 'tar' in arteries and the colour that your lungs can become). Maybe then people would realize what they are doing to themselves and to others.
People tend to let facts go in one ear and out the other when it comes to drugs/alcohol/cigarettes and their health. They've been taught in school that cigarettes are bad and commercials come on television about the risks involved. Smokers are aware they can get Cancer or end up with a nasty cough, but they don't think it will happen to them. Sometimes people think they are invincible. In their mind they won't get cancer, and neither will their loved ones. I think most smokers have the idea that they can stop whenever they notice they are getting sick and that it will all be better. Maybe they think Cancer is no big deal. When they force others into their deadly game it is even worse. I don't smoke so I should not have to breathe in someone's smoke and neither should their kids. If these parents don't care about their own health, they can make the bad choice to smoke. They should wait though until they are outside of the car where their children are riding. How hard is it to wait five to twenty minutes when you reach your destination?
One of my co-workers claims that he has been smoking since the age of 14, for the past 12 years. He claims that his lungs are perfect and says he has even done numerous tests and scans to confirm this. He is always smoking and smells of smoke when he is speaking to us (can you imagine when he interfaces with customers). I feel like he needs to have a dentyne ice or something for the least, because he is indeed causing health risks to the rest of us
Yuck! He is obviously trying to rationalize his addiction. I cannot stand the smell of cigarette, I literally feel short of air and I must have a window nearby. Parents who smoke in front of their children should be sent to jail and persecute it for negligence and endangering the life of a minor.
