This looks to be a simple difference in culture that backfired on someone's good intentions. It makes me think about an upcoming show that is getting ready to be aired in March on cable television here in the US. In it, a black family and a white family switch roles and live each others lives. In one of the scenes, the white mother, who is now black, makes a reference to blacks as 'creatures' but it was not made in that type of context. However, the blacks who were in the room were deeply offended and very uncomfortable and failed to understand or try to understand the context in which the remark was made.
My point is in this story, the person in New Zealand was simply trying to assist impoverished children in Kenya; she wasn't trying to say they should be treated as dogs. It just so happened her choice of food was similar to dog food, and the Kenyan authorities took offense to it. Very interesting story on differences in culture.
