Comments: With all the different diagnoses being thrown about these day how do you really know if your child's challenges are based on autism, dyslexia or ADHD if each 'professional' gives you a different answer?
It's quite common for Autism and ADHD to be linked together.. My Daughter has a diagnosis of Autism and ADHD, whilst my younger son has a diagnosis of just ADHD. Now looking at the two children, there are definite distinctions in their behaviors. The ADHD side of things affects your concentration levels (Which are normally very low), and the child normally has massive amounts of energy (Normally like bouncing off the wall levels).
In the UK where I live, you cannot get a diagnosis unless 4 different professionals ie_ Your Doctor, Paediatrician, Psychiatrist and school nurse all come together for meetings and every single one of them agrees on the same diagnosis for your child... Hence why it can take years for the diagnosis.
The Autism side of things affects the childs emotional and social skills ie- your child probably did not talk until they were at least 4 years old, and normally they cannot socialize with other children in the same way that children of the same age can.
Regarding the diagnosis for Dyslexia, this is a totally different diagnosis, and normally picked up by schools as it involves the child's reading. Normally people with Dyslexia can be very bright, but the words that they are reading often appear jumbled or mixed up.
If you have any doubts that the diagnosis are not correct.. I would push through to see the Psychiatrist. In most countries I would say that these are the professionals who lead the way forward in getting the diagnosis in the first place.
Hope that makes sense, and good luck!
Children with autism may be over-diagnosed with ADHD, new study suggests
Pediatric researchers report that children with ASD may mistakenly be diagnosed with ADHD because they have autism-related social impairments rather than problems with attention. This is important for understanding what are the right services and treatments for a child. Ref. Source 8o.
