Study finds 90 percent of American men overfat. Researchers reported earlier this year in the journal Frontiers of Public Health that up to 76 percent of the world's population may be overfat. Now these same researchers have focused their efforts on data from 30 of the top developed countries, with even more alarming findings that up to 90 percent of adult males and 50 percent of children may be overfat. Yes many people are over weight. This is the 21st century and we need to do something to get back to being healthy but we are fighting traditions. Back a couple hundred years ago being over weight was a sign of success and wealth. Thus the saying of him being a "Fat Cat". Over coming this way of thinking is going to take a bit but I believe over time it will happen.
Of course, there has to be personal accountability for the problem but a lot of factors are working against people who are obese. The food industry engineers its food to hit all the triggers that the human mind craves but are rare in nature. Sugar, salt and fat are engineered heavily in our foods, even the ones that wouldn't normally have it. Combine that with the hectic pace of daily life and you have a perfect storm of poor choices. Subsidies on the bad calories mean people who are on fixed incomes are buying more junky foods.
Is it possible for us to return to meals at the table that have been prepared from fresh ingredients? Possibly, but there are a lot of factors that don't want that to happen.
We don't blame others for our choices but industry is using science to engineer food that's bad for us that our body craves. Now, that should be illegal. I work hard to stay in shape, but with the sedentary lifestyle we live and with science against us there are those who can't do what I do. They lack the time to eat healthy and exercise, and that is a function of the Internet making jobs a 16 or 20 hour thing.
Obesity is a bigger problem then cigarettes and alcohol because we need to eat 3 meals a day. Imagine sending a drug addiction or alcohol through a store filled with temptations multiple times a day. That's asking for trouble.
Fast food wouldn't be allowed to advertise. We are inundated with their ads at times when we are most likely to succumb. A personal choice does need to be made but the deck is stacked against us before we even start.
