THE ART OF 'NEW WOMEN'
Robert Henri, considered by many to be the most influential American art teacher of the early 20th century, encouraged a whole generation of artists -- many of them women -- to free themselves from stylistic and social restrictions and create art from their personal experience.

Robert Henri had a profound effect on modern art in general and not just on women in art. Unfortunately, I have no love of modern art. Much of modern art that opened the door for women in art also opened the door for artistic nudity. I feel that artistic nudity is beautiful at some points and tasteless at other times. It also opened the door for painting and artistic renditions of nude children. Robert Henri changed the rules, but the door he opened led to pathways we truly didn't want to travel.
Art doesn't always show you what you want to see, sometime it shows you what you need to see. If you an art object that offends you, take a moment to consider why it offends you. Don't just ask "Why would an artist create such a thing, " Or, "Why does this museum display such a thing," Ask yourself "How is this thing affecting me, and why?"
What pieces of art confront you, and how did they make you feel?
