MORE AND MORE AMERICANS ARE GETTING CRAFTY
Just how big is the craft industry? Last year 75 percent of all American households had at least one person who had ever crafted, and 58 percent had someone who had participated in crafts during the past year.

I am not very crafty at all. My wife is a bit better, and has decorated our entire living room in Americana decor. For those of you who don't what Americana is, it is basically all sorts of crafts with a stars and stripes theme. Plus she has decorations for all the seasons like Christmas, Easter and Fall. She attends a lot of craft shows, and is big into scrap-booking, which I suppose can be considered a craft. My craft is surfing the web; that's about all I am good at.
I am absolutely rubbish at arts, but as for craft work, I can sew, do patchwork, and can just about knit a baby cardigan--1 pattern, one type only kind. If I lost my knitting pattern, I would really be lost! !
that's about as far as my limit stretches!
I think crafts are fun. It's handy to be able to create something with built-in shortcuts, so that it looks good but doesn't take way too much time (for example, stamps - you don't have to spend the time drawing a design, you can just use a stamp). You can create things that have the appearance of art but can be used and created every day.
The problem that I find, especially with the craft of scrapbooking, is that not only does it take up a lot of time dispite the shortcuts, but it also is quite expensive! And once you get started, you want everything! At least, that's how I know I would likely be. And I know I couldn't afford it. So I try to dig out some of the knowledge I should be gaining as an art student to create my own cards. This way, I don't have to dish out the money to buy a card at the store either. (and of course, it provides a personal touch as well)

I draw, paint, home decorate, sculpt, build, lay tile, pretty much you name it. Art has always been a hobby, and I have sold a lot of art over the years. I generally don't go very far without a pen or pencil and a scrap of paper to draw on. My largest project to date, has been set design for a local drama club that included a matt painted western town and desert valley scene. Great fun, but a little time consuming.
I've never considered myself crafty, but have become more so these past few years. I design and construct jewelry, which I think is more of a craft than an art. Other than that about the only crafty things I do are projects for my church youth group.
