Is The Serpent Satan?

I was reading Moses and I got stuck in this verse. Maybe some of you can share your views about it:

Moses 4:6

"And Satan put in into the heart of the serpent, (for he had drawn away many after him,) and he sought also to beguile Eve, for he knew not the mind of God, wherefore he sought to destroy the world"


We are talking about a beast being drawn away after Satan during the pre-existence? Are we talking about a normal spirit who was not courageous enough and end up being a beast when he/she came to this earth? What are your thoughts?

I have always read over this verse quickly (a bad thing to do), but it is good that you picked up on it. My understanding is the serpent and Satan are one and the same person and the use of the word 'serpent' is symbolic. However, in this verse it does not seem to be the case, I would like insight into it also.

The scriptural word serpent indicates a winged being, an angel of light. Indeed, the serpent who beguiled Eve was not a snake as such, but someone convincingly authoritative, perhaps nigh unto an angel of light. Whether that messenger of falsehood was the devil himself or one of his followers, the influence of that spirit once known as Lucifer was being directly manifest.

For me, the bottom line is this: Satan, throughout scripture and throughout history, has been attempting to impersonate Christ. It is not coincidental that the Hebrew word for serpent used in Genesis 3, transliterated as "nachash," means to hiss or to whisper. Doesn't the devil whisper subtly, trying to impersonate the true whisperings of the Holy Ghost? In his interactions with Moses, he appeared as an angel of light. Satan is good at what he does, and he knows that the way to catch those of us who initially desire to follow righteousness is to pose as righteous, or in other words to impersonate as best he can the glory of Christ. However, he cannot bring the fruits of the Spirit, and he has no true glory, and thus we know what is his and what is Christ's.

Quetzalcoatl (Jesus) was often represented in art work by a Serpent. Could not Satan have impersonated the 'serpent' to convince Eve....

Jesus compares himself to the brazen serpent of Moses. Jesus and Satan also share the venus star as a symbol. This probably is a case of Satan imitating Jesus.

If we look at verse 4 we read:

This is the will of the devil and this is what he put into the heart of the serpent, meaning acting with the attributes of a serpent in order to deceive and to blind us. In verse 6 Satan and the serpent is the same, but to help us understand how Satan will deceive us (namely by impersonating a serpent). A serpent has some interesting attributes as mentioned by the Lord in verse 5.

In other instances we have seen that a serpent can represent something good. It sometimes even is a symbol of Christ. This also explains how Satan could manage to deceive Eve.

All of which is my personal opinions of course....
