Mudslides tend to happen in areas where the foundation is very unstable and the houses not well built. It is unfortunate for these people, because more than likely they were already in the difficult circumstances of life.

It's so sad, and there are rumors of text messages being sent by a teacher and some children when the school was buried. How awful, if it's true! Another news report stated it was illegal logging that may have been responsible for destabilizing the slope. Whether that's true or not remains to be discovered. In the meantime, our hearts and prayers go out for those souls who died so terribly.

Offtopic but, An interesting side note, a coup plot against the Phillipine government has been uncovered and supposedly contained during all of this distraction.
