I believe Brasil is a friend to the US that is why we are not hearing much about it in the news, but like everything else, friendship is based on the government of the time. Brasil has a lot of resources and yet they seek after Nuclear power - this may be a tell tale sign of a future ahead.

Nuclear Brazil History & Civil Business Politics

Brasil should be allowed to pursue nuclear enrichment for civilian purposes and so should every other developing economy.

The international community should respect the right of sovereign nations to pursue nuclear energy. This right is extended to the US, Israel, India and other countries armed with nuclear weapons. We know that the US enriches large quantities of uranium for weapons development. So does Israel and several other countries.

This debate should be about the need for nuclear energy. That is a debate the world must have. But unfortunately it always fizzles into one about the nuclear arms race.

The worst part is that countries who so often preach non-proliferation are the worst offenders when it comes to developing WMDs. This sort of hypocrisy is often ignored by the Western media, but certainly not by countries who want nuclear capability.

Accusations of nuclear weapons are almost always levelled towards countries the West doesn't like. Iran is a prime example. Brasil isn't. So its nuclear program, civilian or military, could easily slip under the radar.

Nuclear energy is an absolute must if the world has any hope of weaning away from fossil fuels. Bush even acknowledged this in his 'smoke and mirrors" state of the union address.

With the increasing threat of climate change, I believe countries should be encouraged to acquire nuclear power.

We can not afford to wait for green energy to produce the sort of capacity required by power hungry economies such as the US, China, India and Brasil.
