Global spread of English threatens US, UK: study

The dominance of English as the world's top language -- until recently an advantage to both Britain and the United States -- is now beginning to undermine the competitiveness of both nations, according to a major research report. The report commissioned by the British Council says monolingual English graduates "face a bleak economic future" as multilingual competitors flood into the workforce from all corners of the globe. A massive increase in the number of people learning English is under way and likely to peak at around 2 billion in the next decade, according to the report entitled "English Next."

World Rules English

I can see this argument when Europeans come to the US on temp assignments where I work. They can speak fluent English, as well as 2 or 3 other languages, at the minimum. Meanwhile, here in the US, we are lucky if we can speak English fluently. Knowing multiple languages is also a great factor in procuring very good jobs here in the US, because a lot of companies are going global, and having employees who can communicate with multiple clients is a huge plus. It makes me wish I had pursued a minor in another language when I was in college.

I find it ironic that there is a debate that "English Rules the World", when we here at a site called "International Discussions", use English as our lingua franca?

Yellowknife, I fail to see how what you said, and the application of this Topic have continuity or in other words - what are you trying to say?

World Rules English

Why are we complaining that English rules the world, when our site, in representing the world, uses English?
