GOD SAVE THE QUEEN SPARKS ROW AT COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Australia is in the midst of a royal ruckus with news God Save the Queen won't be played when the Queen opens the Commonwealth Games there later this month.

Queen Save God

I have to agree with the Prime Minister of Australia in that 'God save the Queen' should be played in her presence. She is still the Queen of Australia because it is not a Republic yet. I don't live in Australia and don't know what the sentiment is for the Queen, but my belief is it would still be appropriate. Maybe an Australian native (Arvhic hint hint) can lend more perspective on the matter.

My personal sentiment is that God Save the Queen should not be played. It is Commonwealth Games custom for the host country's national anthem to play and I see no reason why this should change. Did England play Advance Australia fair to the Aussies at the last Ashes. Those guys, especially Warney, were practically royalty to the Poms, or they should have been after 17 years of brutal domination.

Most Australian's don't care about the monarchy or the Queen. She is an ageing figure head who appeals to the older Anglo population. She has even said she believes Australia should become a republic. But the big problem is that our Prime Minister is a staunch monarchist.
