Well, I can say that I cut their hair horribly and pierced their ears against their will -- but, microwaving them? That sounds like a warning of a psychological issue later on.

Don't they say that children who injure animals end up doing some very bad things to people? If you "gleefully" as the article said, mutilate a toy -- does that say something? It just screams "child psychologist" to me!

I cut their hair, but never any melting or anything to that sort. If my child took up tormenting their toys I would probably be a little concerned. If it was a one time instance, then I probably would not be as worried because most children have a little bit of curiosity for that sort of thing. A one time instance would probably cause me to keep an eye out, but if it was just that once then I wouldn't really worry. If my child continued to take part in these little acts of violence I would definately do something about it.

I am not very sure about the credibility of this study regards to Barbie Dolls. When I was a kid, Barbie dolls were not popular in Argentina so I had different types of doll and when I got tired of cutting their hair, piercing their ears, bathing them and so on, I would experiment removing their heads and so on, it was more an act of boredom than anything else. Of course, I never thought about burning them period but what I am trying to say is that most little girls mutilate their dolls at some point of time, but it is not an issue with Barbie dolls per say like the article tries to imply.

My daughter, who is now 11, did go through a stage where she picked apart her dolls. I believe, like LDS_forever pointed out, that it is due to boredom, or plain curiosity. Even the part about the microwave can be due to curiosity, to see what will happen. Kids realize eventually that their toys aren't real, and don't feel pain, or have feelings, and they use them as experiments. Boys tend to be more 'experimental' than girls are, in my opinion. They even start involving bugs and insects, which can be disturbing, but understandable to an extent.

If that were true I think I'd be a serial killer today! I grew up in Trinidad, and in a small town where there wasn't much to do. Let's just say that idle hands do get into a lot of trouble. By the time I figured out how to make a slingshot, then any animal was fair game. I won't get into details here, but I injured a lot of animals (not something I am proud of, but it happened), so I won't necessarily say that statement is true. I think I turned out ok.
