Autism & Body Odor

Autism & Body Odor

If you are the parent of an autistic child with a strong body odor even after bathing please tell us what you have found out about it / your experiences. I notice that some of our boys have a strong metallic like odor that does not seem to go away even with deodorant and is most recognizable with sweat. I have done a small amount of research and found that many other parents have experienced the same thing with their autistic child(Ren).

From what I have learned through the many doctors who have seen our son is that those kids with Autism begin puberty earlier than those who are neurotypical.

We began using an antibacterial soap for my sons body -- focusing with his underarms. We used tear free baby shampoo forever but that doesn't cut it anymore. Our kid is going to be 13 so he is clearly in the middle of puberty. He's almost 6 feet 2 with "hair" In the right places.

We use a lot of deodorant - and sometimes body spray.

And we take showers and wash up a lot.

I find that when things are matter of fact and straight forward it works better. He knows that before a meal he washes his hands. After using the bathroom he washes his hands.

He showers daily and if she begins to smell he goes back and washes.

Lots of autistic kids like to wear dirty clothes because they feel better. They get softer and aren't stiff after 4 days.
