House fails to pass short-term homeland security funding bill
House Republicans failed to garner enough votes to pass a three-week stopgap measure to prevent Department of Homeland Security funding from expiring at midnight. The legislation was an attempt to buy more time for House Republicans to decide how to respond to the Senate's rejection of a funding bill with provisions to derail President Obama's immigration programs. Earlier Friday, the Senate approved a competing full, annual spending bill with no immigration provisions attached. Ref. USAToday
The U.S. House passed a clean funding bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security through September, sending the bill to President Barack Obama and averting a partial shutdown of the department. The vote was 257-167.
House Speaker John Boehner relented by allowing the vote without provisions blocking the President's actions on immigration. Ref. CNN
