Eeek! Don't buy stock, buy *property* and things you can actually use... It may fluctuate in "assessed" value, but the intrinsic value of land and useful goods never changes.
Buying stocks may show nice on paper, but in the end, it's just paper with no value in and of itself.
Okay, so buying in at the "bottom" can make a nice profit. But where/when does the "bottom" happen? How do you know? You could buy GM stock right now for about $3/share, but rumor has it it's going down to zero.
It's all too risky, in my opinion.

It is a long term investment for education funds. One can not buy land or such for a matter of a few thousand a year. Mutual funds ect I think in the 18 year mark are best. I will put in this next year and next as much as I can as when we come out it will increase at a good rate. If I had 50 000 I would by land but it has not deflated enough here to make that a good choice, though that could soon change. I would buy some in the sate right now if any where.
Property here might be slowed but is still increasing. But you need 300 000 to buy a house. So that is 75 000 down. I will not have that in the near future to invest me thinks.

When a companies stocks go down to zero does it exist? Nevermind.
Buy guns, bullets, food, traps, survival gear, rabbits, chickens, goats, seeds, feed, tools, tobacco products, alcohol, clothes and any kind of commodities you can get your hands on in bulk for cheap. Silver, gold, and platinum if you are set. Of course I am not set.
You can use all of this for trade or use.
Goodbye $700 billion...Hello $7.4 trillion
Remember when Glenn said that $700 billion in government speak was really about $2 trillion? He was only off by about $5.4 trillion dollars as the Feds have (so generously) pledged $7.4 trillion of your hard earned tax money to ailing banks. Our national debt is already over $10 trillion---where is this money coming from?
