The Future Of Our Special Needs Kids

For those of you with special needs children - regardless of what special needs do you wonder what's going to happen to our kids when we age?

My son is high functioning Asperger's. We are working very hard with him now about life skills - handling money, cooking, cleaning, interacting with the public -- basic things he's going to need to live on his own.

We also wonder what if he can't live on his own. Or if he doesn't partner or marry.

I have laid awake at night - many a night thinking about moving to a new house with a daylight basement that is self contained with his own entrance. So he can be independent and we can be there in case he needs us.

Maybe I am overthinking this.

But I wonder about parents who's kids are not high functioning -- what do you do? What are your plans? Do you have plans? Is this a worry?

I consider this all the time, more so because I live in a Banana Republic where being neurotypical is tough enough let alone to have special needs makes life formidable. I just hope to prepare things and them so that they at least can have a fighting chance, their basic needs met and not count on anyone for anything because in this savage world people will look to take advantage at every turn.

I think about it all the time and I never going to give up on my children, no matter how hard it gets. Sometimes I do feel like giving up but I try to regain strength somehow and continue teaching and doing the best of my ability and of course, hope for the best possible outcome.
