Tobago and Trinidad Day Emancipation

This is a very important date for Trinidad and the whole Caribbean because on August 1, 1838, the enslaved Africans throughout the British Empire in the whole Caribbean were finally freed.

Funny thing is even though it happened all the way back in 1838 it was only in 1985 that emancipation was acknowledged with a holiday. Guess what, Trinidad and Tobago was the FIRST country to acknowledge this, so not even the rest of the world had a day to recognize the abashment of something as terrible as slavery.

Interesting. How come it took so long to establish a date and make it a public holiday?
