My ancestors came from India to the West Indies during the 1900's to work as indentured laborers. However, I have no idea how to track back to my roots in India. I did find a last name for my ancestors but it is a very common name, and not isolated to one area of the country. Maybe some day I will take the time to sit down and attempt to trace my heritage, but I have a feeling it won't be easy.
I had a great uncle (father's side) who came to Trinidad around the 1890's from the Calcutta area (based on his surname).
He went to Guyana for awhile and returned then left to go to Panama for awhile then came back to T&T to retire!
The North Indian branch came (was brought by the English) in the 1830's and intermarried with the T&T locals (payol from Venezuela and T&T) usually African Spanish and other mixtures.
Supposedly the North Indian groups (identified by Bhojpuri dialect) did not have surnames and usually picked picked up surnames they liked or suggested by the English in T&T at the time.
