HOW YOUR STAFF CAN DRIVE YOU MAD

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - Everyone knows it's hard having difficult or dim-witted bosses. But it's just as hard managing dud employees who run the gamut from aggravating to useless.

These days, employment is a very valuable resource. We are past the late 90's where jobs were abundant and competition was fierce. In my opinion, these types of problems are easy to deal with. If they don't shape up then ship them out. In my job, such shortcomings are not constantly dealt with. Sure there will be the few instances here or there; even I engage in some of those activities. When it becomes a chronic problem however, then performance assessments are in order, and a plan of action laid out. If things don't change, good luck finding another job.

I really get frustrated with my dud employees. I am in somewhat of a manager role and have to continual try to teach the same things over and over and push them to multitask, and they aren't kids. Problem is, we are short staffed as it is and we are in a hiring freeze, so I can't really fire him. So I feel stuck in between a rock and a hard place. And then there is the one who cannot find a way to save his like to be ontime. What is the point in a schedule when you are inconsiderate of it and your manager! My most frustrating employee is the one that argues with me constantly because he thinks he is right about everything. Problem is, I have been here 4 times longer than him and he has been there less than a year! I have no hair now, not because I shave it off, but because it fell out from the stress he causes. I finally just told him this shift that I will not argue with him. If doesn't show some respect for me and a stronger desire to learn, then I will write him up. What else can I do?

Konq, I think people in general have a problem when they are told to do something, they want to be in control yet they are not smart enough on how to deal with those differences of opinion. At my work, my boss sometimes asks me to do certain things that it was not in our agreement, very seriously but not arguing I let him know that this is not what we talked about, finally I have to end up doing it but he knows I am not pleased. It can be very frustrating because people do not keep their word.

Now, dealing with dud employees there are those everywhere they should be warn on their behavior and if it does not change overtime, they should be fired, after all they are getting money for doing nothing. If the company cannot afford firing the person then the person needs to be constantly under control and whoever is the manager ask a detail report of the work the person did during the day.

The worst-case scenario is the boss's kids. They hardly work at all, and then when they do, they complain louder than anyone else -- and to the people who are actually doing the *real* work! I hate that. Excuse me, but if you had to deal with *my* job, you wouldn't last a week.

I may be that person. When I am at work all I do is sit there and not do a darn thing. I do stare at the screens and watch people walk about and work. TO me work is a dirty four letter word. I looked hard and long to find a job that I do nothing what so ever. smile.gif
