Pity the guy who lost his job. But also pity the guy who kept his. As companies run leaner operations with fewer workers, they're asking more from those still employed.

Employees Of Expecting

This is something I've seen at several different companies. Workers are laid off in lean times, but the company doesn't hire anyone back when business picks up again. Or, a worker quits the company and no one is hired to replace them; their work is foisted off onto the remaining staff. Those workers who kept their jobs are hopping to keep up, and quite often work is piling up or done in such a hurry that mistakes are made (which often means it has to be redone). Not always a good choice for employers to make, in my opinion.

I have also seen this happen. The scary part is I have seen this happen in the hospital I am working at now. The nurses here are so overworked that mistakes are made. Its only a matter of time that one of those mistakes becomes fatal. Being the "boss" I go behind and double check the nurses critical work, such as how much of a certain medication is given, when it is given and so forth. I am not in the position where I can hire, fire, or even discipline people, but I am the guy who's in charge of the nurses, so I pull them aside and we fix the mistake. But even I can only do so much. I encourage my nurses to work until the job gets done, therefore I take a lot of trouble about overtime pay. but I don't pass this on to the nurses. Overtime is my problem, not theirs. My nurses may be overworked, but I take care of them the best that I can.

Employees Of Expecting

We're having this problem right now at my office. Two and a half people short staffed, and it's almost tax season. I'm working crazy hours and just expected to get the work done, no questions about it. I'm questioning whether or not I want to do this anymore; if they have no respect for the sacrifices I have to make in my personal life, why should I stay? Not to mention my health - mental and physical. It's honestly very very bad at the office right now.

I am looking to take more responsibility at my work. We have a system that has been in place for over 4 years and no one has really taken the time to get it working properly. I volunteered to do this and so far they are dragging their heels. I am now have the passwords to it to make changes so we will see how it all goes.
