Here is another example of taking a wife from within the immediate family.

QUOTE
Since he realized his father Isaac's displeasure with Chanaanite women, Esau went to Ismael, and in addition to the wives he had, married Maheleth, daughter of Abraham's son Ismael and sister of Nabaioth. (Genesis 28:8)

Now we come to a story every Protestant child knows. I used to think, "Poor Jacob. He sure got cheated." Now I still feel sorry for Jacob, but Gods role in this story should have made Jacob very angry.
QUOTE
That night he brought Lia, his daughter to Jacob, who had relations with her. Jacob did so; he completed her week. (2) Then Laban gave him his daughter Rachel in marriage. So Jacob went in to Rachel also; he loved her more than Lia, and served Laban another seven years. When the Lord saw that Lia was disliked, he made her fruitful WHILE RACHEL REMAINED BARREN. (Genesis 29:23)

Jacob didn't want or ask for Lia in the first place. He worked fourteen years, twice what he had bargained for, for the wife he really loved and wanted. When this love for Rachel was too obvious, his God stepped in and Rachel paid the price for his love. God left her barren!

It seemed to be the custom of the day to keep God's prophets busy in the bedroom. God only intervened enough to keep the maids pregnant, everything in an uproar, and all the while he was gaining followers.

footnote (2)
The best explanation is from the Torah. The girl's father told Jacob, "But
wait until this week [of wedding celebrations] for [Leah] is over."

QUOTE
Jacob became impatient with Rachel and answered her, "Can I take the place of God, who has made you barren?" She replied, "Here is my slave-girl, Bala; go into her that she may bear on my knees, (3) and I too may have children by her." She gave him Bala, her maid, in marriage, and Jacob had relations with her.

Back in (Genesis 16:2) Sarai said to Abram,
QUOTE
"The Lord has kept me from bearing; go into my maid; perhaps I shall get children through her."

First Sarai, now Rachel has to give her slave-girl or maid to her husband to have children. God made Sarai and now Rachel barren and both Abraham and Jacob are sent to the maid for children. But that's not the end of all the generous giving of maids.
QUOTE
When Lia knew that she had ceased bearing, she gave Zelpha her maid to Jacob in marriage. But God remembered Rachel; he heard her prayer and made her fruitful.

Jacob was a very busy man! At this rate God will soon have his army.

The story of Thamar is one I don't ever remember hearing before I started my research, but it certainly needs to be brought to light. Her first husband, Her, was wicked, so God killed him. Her's father told his brother Onan to perform your duty as brother-in-law.Onan ... wasted his seed on the ground, so God killed him also. The
father of these men promised Thamar another husband as soon as his youngest son grew up. This promise was forgotten, so Thamar played a little trick.
QUOTE
She put off her widows garments, put on a veil, wrapped herself up and sat by the gateway of Enaim on the road to Thamna; for she was aware that Sela had grown up, yet she had not been given to him in marriage. When Juda saw her, he thought she was a harlot; for she had covered her face. He went over to her at the roadside and said, "Come, let me have intercourse with you," not knowing that she was his daughter-in-law. She asked,"What will you give me to have intercourse with me?" About three months later Juda was told, "Your daughter-in-law, Thamar, has played the harlot and is pregnant as a result." Juda said, "BRING HER OUT TO BE BURNED." (Genesis 38:14)

footnote (3)
In the Torah the phrase is,
QUOTE
"Come to her and let her give birth on my lap." (Genesis 30:3)

On my lap. Literally, "on my knees." This denotes that the child born would be considered hers. The woman giving birth would sit on the lap of the foster mother, using the lap like a birthstool. The child would then appear to emerge between the legs of the foster mother.

It was all right for him to forget his promise, then proposition her at the side of the road. It wasn't all right for her to be the other half of his affair. But she had kept his signet, cord, and staff, so he decided it might be a little embarrassing to push the matter any further and dropped the charge. What is sauce for the goose is not
always sauce for the gander. .

My Sunday school teacher never mentioned Hebrew slaves purchased by Jews. There were special rules from God, just for Hebrew male slaves, which no one ever mentioned in church. It seems if you purchase one, and his wife is part of the deal, she leaves when he leaves.

QUOTE
But if his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall remain the masters property and the man shall leave alone. (Exodus 21:4)

They lived together, worked together, and had children together. None of that matters any more than a leaf blowing in the wind. She belongs to the master, and the man shall leave alone! If, however,...... There's not usually an IF with God, so let's keep reading.
QUOTE
If, however, the slave declares, "I am devoted to my master and my wife and children; I will not go free," his master shall bring him to God and there, at the door or doorpost, he shall pierce his ear with an awl, thus keeping him as a slave forever.

How convenient for the master that God should make such a law. Oh well! At least there was an, "If, however." Imagine your daughter, and grandchildren, living with a male slave that decided he didn't want his ear pierced. Can you imagine how busy God must have been? With everything else He was responsible for, He took time for ear piercings!

I didn't learn about Jews selling their own daughters in Sunday school either.
QUOTE
When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go free as male slaves do. (Exodus 21:7)

God and the Jews had to be fresh out of the caves of the ice ages. I know there are a few twisted minds in this world today, but the majority of us would never
consider selling our daughter into slavery. Yet today millions of people still worship the God that wrote the rule in (Exodus 21:7)

But if you did sell your daughter, you could rest assured that God made rules to see that she was cared for. This passage finally gives some rights to the female slave, but only if she is purchased for the owner's son.

QUOTE
If a man buys a female Hebrew from her father, and If he destines her for his son, he shall treat her like a daughter. If he takes another wife, he shall not withhold her food, her clothing, or her conjugal rights. (Exodus 21:9)

She has no right to love, husband, or family. To put it bluntly, he HAS to FEED HER,
CLOTHE HER, and HAVE SEX with her BY GOD"S LAW! While your loving, caring, God was making all these rules about how slaves were to be bought, sold, and cared for, He decided to protect the owner. So He made another rule. He decided it was all right to kill a slave as long as he, or she, survived a day or two? I"m going to take you back now to (Exodus 21:7) again, and play, "What If." What if a Jew sold his daughter and the new master strikes her with a rod so hard she dies after two days? Should the new owner try to get his money back, since she only lasted two days?
When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. Here we have another, "If, however" ...If, however, the slave survives a day or two, HE (the owner) IS NOT TO BE PUNISHED, SINCE THE SLAVE IS HIS OWN PROPERTY. (Exodus 21:20)
God said it's all right to beat another human like a horse, but ONLY until they are, "nearly" dead.

Next, God said it was all right to seduce a virgin if your heart was in the right place, ...and you had the shekels.
QUOTE
When a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall pay
her marriage price and marry her. If her father refuses to give her to him, he must still pay him the customary marriage price for virgins.  (Exodus 22:15)

You just buy her and marry her. But if the father refuses, does she sell for half price next time, or does the next man get her free since the price has already been paid? And what do you suppose virgins went for in those days? (Deuteronomy 22:29) sets the price of virginity at fifty shekels.

There must have been a lot of extra curricular sex activity for God to need all these new rules. In this rule I would point out it's forgivable for a man to have carnal relations with a slave if he's punished and pays the price. SHE shall be punished but not put to death, but there is no arrangement for HER to go to the priest for atonement or get forgiven.

QUOTE
If a man has carnal relations with a female slave who has already been living with another man but has not yet been redeemed or given her freedom, they shall be punished but not put to death, because she is not free. The man, moreover, shall bring to the entrance of the Meeting Tent a ram as his guilt offering to the Lord. With this ram the priest shall make atonement before the Lord for the sin he has committed, and it will be forgiven him. (Leviticus 19:20)

THEY will be punished but not put to death. SHE, at this point, is left alone. SHE must deal with her conscience, and any fears she may have, by herself. He, on the other hand, can take a ram to the meeting tent, where the priest handles the atonement for him. Then he walks away scot-free with a clear conscience. Seems
a little unfair to me! God made some strange laws, but it is almost unbelievable that the next law is printed in a book used today by so many religions.

What were the Jews doing so long ago that God had to throw this one in?
QUOTE
"And if a woman approach unto any beast, and lie down thereto, thou shalt kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death: their blood shall be upon them." (Leviticus 20:16)

Remember God destroying Sodom and Gamorra for their wickedness? If there was enough of this filth going on to make it necessary to have this law, why didn't God destroy His Jews?

Throughout the Old Testament God ordered the best and first of everything. Here He told his priest that a divorced woman is not good enough for him. His priest must be the first! "A priest shall not marry a woman who has been a prostitute or lost her honor, nor a woman who has been divorced by her husband; for the priest is sacred to his God. And pity the priest's daughter if she dishonors her father!
QUOTE
A priest's daughter who loses her honor by committing fornication and thereby dishonors her father also, SHALL BE BURNED TO DEATH. "The priest shall marry a virgin, otherwise he will have base offspring among his people. I the Lord have made him sacred." (Leviticus 21:7)

War Holy The Mousetrails

Before I post more of Mousetrails, I would like to invite my readers to look in the Private Boards section for a work of fiction I wrote before I started Mousetrails. It was also inspired by my research of The Old Testament of the Bible. It's called THE SONS of GOD. Enjoy.

All Bible quotes are from the Douay-Catholic Bible

God was obsessed with virgins and sex. Lot offered his virgin daughters to the mob. Then later those same virgin daughters both found a way to carry Lot's child. God made a law about the conjugal rights of female slaves. He also made a law about paying the bride price of a virgin that had been seduced. Then there is a rule about carnal relations with a slave, and killing a woman caught having
sex with a beast. And if a priest's daughter gets caught committing fornication, LORD HAVE MERCY! But the most degrading law for women is yet to come.

Please, bear with me on the length of the next Bible passage. It is the most horrible, outlandish, chauvinistic, cruel, medically ignorant, passage in the Bible. If a woman never had the thought of another man enter her mind, but she had a jealous, insecure idiot for a husband, she could be put through this absurd stupidity ordered by God! It is sad to think that many probably were, through no fault of their own.

Now, as you read this, remember, these words came directly from the mouth of God Himself.

QUOTE
THE LORD SAID TO MOSES, "Speak to the Israelites and tell them: If a man's wife goes astray and becomes unfaithful to him by having intercourse with another man,
THOUGH HER HUSBAND HAS NOT SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE OF THE FACT, so that her impurity remains unproved for lack of a witness who might have caught her in the act; or if man is overcome by a feeling of jealousy that makes him suspect his wife, WHETHER SHE WAS ACTUALLY IMPURE OR NOT: he shall bring his wife
to the priest and shall take along as an offering for her a tenth of an epha of barley meal. However, he shall not pour oil on it nor put frankincense over it, since it is a cereal offering for an appeal in a question of guilt. "The priest shall first have the woman come forward and stand before the Lord. In an earthen vessel he shall meanwhile put some holy water, as well as some dust that he has taken from the floor of the Dwelling. Then, as the woman stands before the Lord, the priest shall uncover her head and place in her hands the cereal offering of her appeal, that is, the cereal offering of jealousy, while he himself shall hold the bitter water that brings a curse. Then he shall adjure the woman, saying to her, "If no other man has had intercourse with you, and you have not gone astray by impurity while under the authority of your husband, be immune to the curse brought by this bitter water. But if you have gone astray while under the authority of your husband and have acted impurely by letting a man other than your husband have intercourse with you" -- so shall the priest adjure the woman with this oath of imprecation- "may the Lord make you an example of malediction and imprecation among your people by causing your thighs to waste away and your belly to swell! (Numbers 5:11)

In simple language, the priest will adjure (charge) the woman with this oath of imprecation (curses) and ask the Lord to make her an example of malediction (slander) and imprecation (curses) among her people by causing her thighs to waste away and her belly to swell!

Just try to imagine the mental attitude of a wife that has been put through this ordeal. But she dared not say anything, because God, the priest, and her husband had total power over her. In this day, in this country, the idiot husband would probably be preparing his own meals for the rest of his life. But the real shock is yet to come.

QUOTE
If, however, the woman has not defiled herself, but is still pure, she
will be immune and WILL STILL BE ABLE TO BEAR CHILDREN.
(Numbers 5:28)

No witnesses are required. She doesn't have to be caught in the act. It only takes a FEELING OF MALE JEALOUSY for a woman's husband to drag her before the priest, where she will suffer charges, curses, slander and watch her belly swell and her thighs waste away. And here we have another, "If, however." If, however, she is innocent, she can still bear children? What woman in her right mind would ever want to bear children after being treated like that? Of course, if God and man could put her through such an ordeal, I have no doubt they could see to it that she stayed pregnant! THIS, Christian, IS YOUR GOD! He knew nothing about the human body. ANY woman put through the ordeal just described,
would probably swell and waste away. This law that came DIRECT FROM THE MOUTH OF YOUR GOD was, horrible, outlandish, chauvinistic, cruel, medically ignorant, and I"m going to add another word, sadomasochistic.

Mousetrails The Holy War - Page 15

All Bible quotes are from the Douay-Catholic Bible

The God of the Jews was sadomasochistic! How else can you look at a law from God, based on jealousy, that inflicts such humiliation and horrible pain on women? Jealousy had an even worse consequence, if you were jealous of one of God's favorites.

Miriam and Aaron became jealous of Moses and his relationship with God, so,

QUOTE
Mariam and Aaron spoke against Moses on the pretext of the marriage he had contracted with a Chusite woman. (Numbers 12:1)

QUOTE
So angry was the Lord against them that when he departed, and
the cloud withdrew from the Tent, there was Miriam, a snow white
leper. (Numbers 12:9)

No bitter water for Mariam. She wasn't that lucky! But why just Miriam? She was only half of the number that spoke against Moses. Why was Aaron not punished? Were I a female Jew living at this time, I would hide behind a rock and hope to be left behind, alone in the desert, rather than be accused of crossing this God, or
my husband! The only time a man paid attention to a woman was when she said the wrong thing. Even if she made a vow, a man could nullify it.
QUOTE
If a maid or a married woman makes a vow or pledge, and her father disapproves, then any vow or any pledge she has made becomes null and void; and the Lord releases her from it, since her father has expressed to her his disapproval. (Numbers 30:6)

Her husband has the same power of disapproval. In either case the female and her wishes are null and void. Females were allowed to think for themselves but only if, (A) She keeps her thoughts to herself, or (B)The male in her life approves!

And there is even a rule from God on marrying female captives taken in battle. If you see a pretty woman you want to take home, You may take her home to your house. But before she may live there, she must shave her head and pare her nails and lay aside her captives garb. After she has mourned her father and mother
for a full month,
QUOTE
you may have relations with her, and you shall be her husband and she shall be your wife. However, if later you lose your liking for her, you shall give her her freedom, if she wishes it; but you shall not sell her or enslave her, since she was married to you under compulsion. (Deuteronomy 21:10)

Then what happens to her? She is not a wife, or a slave. Her parents are dead. Her home-town has been destroyed. She is among strangers in a strange land, and could be pregnant. Where does she live? What does she eat? Where can she go? Facing this, she probably wouldn't want her "freedom."

Mousetrails The Holy War The Bible Revealed - Page 15

All Bible quotes are from the Douay-Catholic Bible

Starting in (Deuteronomy 22:21) God handed down several rules concerning sex that give an inside picture of God's thinking at that time. If a woman is found not to have been a virgin the day she was married, she is brought to the entrance of her fathers house, ...and there the townsmen shall stone her to death. When a
man is discovered having relations with a married woman, ...both the man and the woman shall die. If a man has relations with a betrothed woman in the city, she could have cried out, so they are both brought to the gates of the city, ...and there stoned to death. If a man seizes a betrothed maiden in the open fields and has relations with her, ...

QUOTE
the man alone shall die. If a man comes upon a maiden that is not betrothed, takes her and has relations with her, and their deed is discovered, the man who had relations with her shall pay the girl's father fifty silver shekels and take her as his wife, because he has deflowered her. Moreover, he may not divorce her as long as he lives. (Deuteronomy 22:28)

But if you deflowered her, and your deed is not discovered, the father only loses fifty shekels. Of course, she loses her virginity, and you"re still single? And what happened to (Exodus 22:15)? Is God making a slight rule change here, or did He forget the, "Man seduces virgin." rule He made earlier?

When a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall pay her marriage price and marry her. If her father refuses to give her to him, he must still pay him the customary marriage price for virgins. With her fathers refusal and fifty shekels, you can walk away. In Deuteronomy you pay the fifty shekels, and marry her with no possibility of divorce. Are they supposed to live with the old or the new rule? God was always making rules, and threatening curses if the rules weren't followed.
