QUOTE
Josue next passed on with all Israel from Lebna to Lachis, where they set up a camp during the attack. The Lord delivered Lachis into the power of Israel, so that on the second day Josue captured it and put it to the sword with every person in it, just as he had done at Lebna. At that time Horam, king of Gazer, came up to help Lachis, but Josue defeated him and his people, LEAVING HIM NO SURVIVORS. From Lachis, Josue passed on with all Israel to Eglon; encamping near it, they attacked it and captured it the same day, putting it to the sword. He fulfilled the doom that day on every person in it, just as he had done at Lachis.

QUOTE
From Eglon, Josue went up with all Israel to Hebron, which they attacked and captured. They put it to the sword with its king, all its towns, and every person there, leaving no survivors, just as Josue had done to Eglon. He fulfilled the doom on it and every person there. Then Josue and all Israel turned back to Dabir and attacked it, capturing it with its king and all its towns. They put them to the sword and fulfilled the doom of every person there, LEAVING NO SURVIVORS.

QUOTE
Thus was done to Dabir and its king what had been done to Hebron, as well as Lebna and its king. Josue conquered the entire country; the mountain regions, the Negeb, the foothills, the mountain slopes, with all their kings. HE LEFT NO SURVIVORS, but fulfilled the doom on all who lived there, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded. (Josue 10:28)

The cities of Maceda, Lebna, Lachis, Gazer, Eglon, Dabir, and Hebron had at least 12,000 people in each. In the mention of Dabir's and Hebron's towns, the word towns is plural, so four towns at 25% of the population of a city, 3000 each. Four towns at 3000 each is 12,000, plus seven cities at 12,000 = 96,000.
96,000 died.
QUOTE
Again the Lord "delivered " the opposition into Israel's hands. With His help, and blessing, His chosen people killed again. When the forces of Juda attacked, the Lord delivered the Chanaanites and Pherezites into their power, AND THEY SLEW TEN THOUSAND of them in Bezec. (Judges 1:4)

10,000 died.

In this account, the forces of Juda either had an axe to grind, or they just enjoyed mutilation.

QUOTE
...When they defeated the Chanaanites and Pherezites, Adonibezec fled. They set out in pursuit, and when they caught him, cut off his thumbs and his big toes. He was brought to Jerusalem, and there he died. (Judges 1:5)

1 died.

Another city, another big loss of life because of God's chosen people.
QUOTE
The Judaites fought against Jerusalem and captured it, PUTTING IT TO THE SWORD; then they destroyed the city by fire. (Judges 1:8)

12,000 died.

Hebron has already been mentioned, and counted. So to keep the numbers down, I will count only Sesai, Ahiman, and Tholmai. To further keep numbers down, they will be counted as towns instead of cities.
QUOTE
Juda also marched against the Chanaanites who dwelt in Hebron, which was formerly called Cariath-Arbe, and defeated Sesai, Ahiman and Tholmai. (Judges 1:10)

9,000 died.

Since God was helping them take the land
QUOTE
...Juda went with his brother Simeon, and they defeated the Chanaanites who dwelt in Sephath. After having doomed the city to destruction, they renamed
it Horma. (Judges 1:17)

It is interesting to note here that in verse 19, that
QUOTE
...since the Lord was with Juda, he gained possession of the mountain region. Yet he could not dislodge those who lived in the plain, because they had IRON chariots.

The Lord was with Juda, but iron chariots defeated Him? Someone should have spread the happy tidings, all it takes to defeat the God of the Jews is an army with iron chariots!
12,000 died.

The LORD was with the house of Joseph when a traitor led them into his city.

QUOTE
He showed them a way into the city, which they then put to the sword; but they let the man and his whole clan go free. (Judges 1:25)

12,000 died.

It seems Israel "offended" God again, so he let them be ruled by Eglon, king of Moab for eighteen years.
QUOTE
But when the Israelites cried out to the Lord, He raised up for them a savior, the Benjaminite Aod, Son of Gera.

We find that Aod's way was very different from all his predecessors. He did not gather warriors and attack the enemy. Aod made himself a two-edged dagger a foot long, and wore it under his clothes over his right thigh.
QUOTE
...and Aod went in to him where he sat alone in his cool upper room, Aod said, "I have a message from God for you." So the king arose from his chair, and then Aod with his left hand drew the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into Eglons belly.

God's chosen savior must have been very strong, because,
QUOTE
...The hilt also went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade because he did not withdraw the dagger from his body.

This needs a short review before we continue. The Israelites "offended" their God, so He let them fall into the hands of a foreign king as punishment. Then when God raised up a savior, the king and his people suffered. If King Eglon could have foreseen the consequences, he would have run Israel off as soon as they
appeared. After killing the king, Aod began to act like your normal Jewish warrior.
QUOTE
..."Follow me," he said to them, "for the Lord has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your power." So they followed him down and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, permitting no one to cross. On that occasion they SLEW
ABOUT TEN THOUSAND Moabites, all of them strong and valiant men. Not a man escaped. (Judges 3:12)

10,001 died.

Israel's leaders were tough, no nonsense, people. Samgar didn't need a sword, or shield, or even a foot long dagger.
QUOTE
After him there was Samgar, son of Anath, who slew six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He, too, rescued Israel. (Judges 3:31)

600 died.

All Bible quotes are from the Douay-Catholic Bible

Remember Juda and the iron chariots he and his God could not defeat? Sisara, the general of Chanaanite King Jabin's army had nine hundred iron chariots, and was beaten by a Jewish woman!

The Lord directed the prophetess Debora to send Barac to fight Sisara.
QUOTE
Debora then said to Barac, "Be off, for this is the day on which the Lord has delivered Sisara into your power. THE LORD MARCHES BEFORE YOU."

But Barac wouldn't go without her, so she got the credit for winning the battle.
QUOTE
So Barac went down to Mount Thabor, followed by his 10,000 men. And the Lord put Sisara and all his chariots and all his forces to rout before Barac. The entire army of Sisara fell beneath the sword, NOT EVEN ONE MAN SURVIVING.

At this point, another woman came into the picture. Sisara deserted his army and was invited to hide under a rug in the tent of Jahel, wife of Cinite Heber. Instead of standing guard for him, the
QUOTE
...wife of Heber, got a tent peg and took a mallet in her hand. While Sisara was sound asleep, she stealthily approached him and drove the peg through his temple down into the ground, so that he perished in death. (Judges 4:6)

Sisara would not have fought with less men than Israel. (10,000) Jahel killed Sisara (1) and later they ...destroyed the Chanaanite King, Jabin. (1)
10,002 died.

When Israel was about to do battle with Madian, God decided if Israel won the battle, they would think their power gave them the victory. To prove their power came from God, He had Gedeon cut the size of his forces to only three hundred men.
QUOTE
That night the Lord said to Gedeon, "Go, descend on the camp, for I HAVE DELIVERED IT UP TO YOU."

Then with the blast of horns, the breaking of jars, and the waving of torches in the middle of the night, Gedeon and three hundred men set an army,
QUOTE
...as numerous as locust, to running and shouting and fleeing. They captured the two princes of Madian, Oreb and Zeb, killing Oreb at the rock of Oreb and Zeb at the wine press of Zeb. (Judges 7:25)

2 died.

When two kings of Madian escaped, Gedeon pursued them. When he asked for bread for his army, the princes of Socchoth refused. Gedeon told them when he captured Zebee and Salmana, he would return to
QUOTE
...grind your flesh in with the thorns and briers of the desert."

He also requested bread from the men of Phanuel and received the same answer. He told them,
QUOTE
"when I return in triumph, I will demolish this tower."
QUOTE
Now Zebee and Salmana were in Carcor with their force of about fifteen thousand men; these were all who were left of the whole Cedemite army, a hundred and twenty thousand swordsmen having fallen. (Judges 8:10)

Gedeon captured the kings and threw their army into a panic. He then got a young man from Socchoth to list the seventy-seven princes and elders of Socchoth.
QUOTE
He took the elders of the city, and thorns and briers of the desert, and ground these men of Socchoth into them. He also demolished the tower of Phanuel and slew the men of the city. (Judges 8:16) Zebee and Salmana said, "Come, kill us yourself for a mans strength is like the man." So Gedeon stepped forward and killed Zebee and Salmana. (Judges 8:21)

120,000 swordsmen, 77 elders, 6,000 men of the city, and 2 kings.
126,079 died.

Gaal, son of Obed, questioned Abimelech's power and made him angry. When Gaal led the men of Sichem against Abimelech, then Gaal
QUOTE
...fled before him, and many fell slain right up to the entrance of the gate. (Judges 9:40)

Abimelech returned to Aruma, but returned the next day and
QUOTE
... fought against the city, and captured it. HE THEN KILLED ITS INHABITANTS and demolished the city, sowing the site with salt. (Judges 9:45)

Many fell slain. (10) City inhabitants (12,000)
12,010 died.

The people of Magdal-Sichem heard of Abimelech's atrocities in Sichem. They were so afraid of Abimelech that they hid in the crypt of the temple of El-Berith. Abimelech cut brushwood and instructed his men to do the same.

QUOTE
So all the men likewise cut down brushwood, and following Abimelech, placed it against the crypt. Then they set the crypt on fire over their heads, so that EVERY ONE OF THE CITIZENS OF MAGDAL-SICHEM, ABOUT A THOUSAND MEN
AND WOMEN, PERISHED. Judges 9:49

1,000 died.

Abimelech was busy doing the Lord's work, capturing city after city when he came to Thebes. Many people climbed a strong tower in the middle of the city, and shut Abimelech out. He was preparing to burn the tower when,
QUOTE
... a certain woman cast the upper part of a millstone down on Abimelech's head and fractured his skull. He immediately called his armor-bearer and said to him, Draw your sword and dispatch me, lest they say of me that a woman killed me. " So his attendant ran him through and he died. (Judges 9:53)
1 died.

In this passage, for a change, God does not order genocide. I haven't found body count numbers yet for a 'severe defeat," so the guess at the death count involved in the taking of twenty cities will be lower.
QUOTE
Jephte then went on to the Ammonites to fight against them, and THE LORD DELIVERED THEM INTO HIS POWER, so that he inflicted a severe defeat on them, from Aroer to the approach of Mennith (twenty cities in all) and as far as Abel-cheramim. Thus were the Ammonites brought into subjection by the Israelites.
(Judges 11:32)

Since there is no mention of the usual annihilation, I will guesstimate only 25% of the normal death count of 12,000 per city died.
60,000 died.

Mousetrails - The First Holy War

All Bible quotes are from the Douay-Catholic Bible

Remember Jephte? He was just one of God's many appointed saviors, but he promised to sacrifice the first person coming out of his house to meet him when he returned victorious. And his virgin daughter was the one he burned to ashes! Jephte argued with the men of Ephraim, and they threatened him, so

QUOTE
...The Galaadites took the fords of Jordan toward Ephraim. When any of the fleeing
Ephraimite said, "Let me pass," the men of Galaad would say to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he answered, "No!" they would ask him to say, "Shibboleth." If he said "Sibboleth," not being able to give the proper pronunciation, they would seize him and kill him at the fords of Jordan. Thus forty-two thousand Ephraimites fell at
that time. (Judges 12:5)

I wonder how long it took for the blood of forty two thousand men to wash out to sea.
42,000 died

QUOTE
And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered themselves together to fight: and Israel went out to war against the Philistines, and camped by the stone of help. And the Philistines came to Aphec, and put their army in array against Israel. And when they had joined battle, Israel turned their backs to the Philistines, and there were slain in that fight here and there in the fields about four thousand men. (1 Kings 4:1)

Then the ancients of Israel decided to bring the ark to the battlefield so God would be with them to help them fight their battle.
QUOTE
So the Philistines fought, and Israel was overthrown, and every man fled to his own dwelling: and there was an exceeding great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen. And the ark of God was taken: and the two sons of Heli, Ophni and Phinees, were slain. (1 Kings 4:10)

Had God abandoned the ark?
34,002 died.

If He had abandoned the ark, He came back with a vengence.
QUOTE
...the hand of the Lord came upon every city with an exceeding great slaughter; and he smote the men of every city, both small and great... (1 Kings 5:9)

The words, "every city," gives the impression that there were a great number of cities, but so there is little room for argument, let's just count three. An exceeding great slaughter is 50,000. Three cities X 50,000
150,000 died.

It is interesting to me that the the Philistines sent the ark away carrying gifts of golden mice and golden emerods in a box.

QUOTE
And the Levites took down the ark of God, and the little box that was at the side of it, wherein were the vessels of gold, and they put them upon the great stone. The men also of Bethsames offered holocausts and SACRIFICED VICTIMS that day to the Lord. Israel was so happy to have their ark back, they killed people! (1 Kings 6:15)

The word victims is plural. There had to be at least two deaths.
2 died.

Naas the Ammonite came to fight against Jabes Galaad. When word got to Saul, he cut up two oxen, and sent the pieces around the country with a message. Come help in the battle, or this is what your oxen will look like. Three hundred thirty thousand men reported for battle.
QUOTE
And it came to pass, when the morrow was come that Saul put the people in three companies: and he came into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and he slew the Ammonites until the day grew hot, and the rest were scattered, so that two of them were not left together. (1 Kings 11:11)

Since Israel won the battle, I would guess Naas the Ammonite might have been out numbered, and some of his men ran away. These two facts will bring my estimate down.
150,000 died.

They were so happy with the Ammonite defeat, they made Saul king,
QUOTE
...and they sacrificed their victims of peace before the Lord.

The word victims is plural. At least two more died.
2 died.

Next we are told of two small battles. Jonathan, son of Saul, showed no fear when he took two Philistine garrisons.
QUOTE
And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines which is in Gabaa. (1 Kings 13:3)

I would tend to believe there were the same number of men in each garrison.
20 died.

QUOTE
And the first slaughter which Jonathan and his armor bearer made, was of about twenty men, within half an acre of land, which a yoke of oxen is wont to plough in a day. (1 Kings 14:14)

20 died.

Jonathan's exploits seemed to inspire Israel to fight, so when the Philistines made a great uproar,
QUOTE
... Saul and all the people that were with him, shouted together, and they came to the place of the fight: and behold every mans sword was turned upon his neighbor, and there was a very great slaughter. (1 Kings 14:20)

If a great slaughter is 50,000, (Kings 5-19) then a very great slaughter would be at least 60,000.
60,000 died.

Over a period of about 150 years, six leaders had come and gone since God assisted Jephte in a battle. So Israel was afraid of the Philistine giant, (six cubits and a span, or 11 feet, 3 inches) Goliath, that taunted them daily. When David delivered food to his brothers on the battle field, he asked about the reward for killing the giant. Great riches, and the kings daughter, was the answer.

David volunteered and was dressed with the kings armor. It was too heavy, so he went with his staff, sling, and five smooth stones.
QUOTE
And he put his hand into his scrip, and he took a stone, and cast it with a sling, and fetching it about struck the Philistine in the forehead. And the stone was fixed in his forehead, and he fell on his face upon the earth. And David prevailed over the Philistine, with a sling and a stone, and he struck, and slew the Philistine. And as David had no sword in his hand, he ran, and stood over the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath, and slew him, and cut off his head. And the Philistines seeing that their champion was dead, fled away. (1 Kings 17:49
)
1 died.
