Military units have attempted a coup in Turkey. Tanks and soldiers moved through Istanbul and the capital, Ankara, through the night. Protesters, responding to a call from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, filled the streets while gunfire and explosions punctuated the chaos.
As morning breaks in Turkey, it's unclear who is in control, the military or the elected government.
Here's what we know:
Erdogan, speaking from Istanbul, said law enforcement has started arresting military officers.
Protesters have been seen confronting soldiers; some civilian casualties were reported on social media.
Bombs were reportedly thrown at the Parliament building in Ankara. A helicopter the government says was stolen by coup plotters was shot down by an F-16, CNN's sister network CNN Turk reported.
CNN Turk was shut down briefly by coup plotters.
The U.S. Embassy has urged Americans in Turkey to shelter in place and let family and friends know they are safe.
Secretary of State John Kerry spoke with Turkey's foreign minister and emphasized "The United States' absolute support for Turkey's democratically elected, civilian government and democratic institutions." Ref. CNN.
What I'm gathering from the news is the coup would have been a success but civilians took to the streets and blocked the military making their advance painstakingly slow. In other words they did not have the support of the people behind them.
