They are a one trick economy and that trick is currently trading at a rather low price. Now, the citizens that thought they could live off of the wealth of other in their socialist paradise have learned that they should have invested in infrastructure and other industries. People always look for something for nothing deals… and they just don't exist.
In theory, communism is ideal… but it squelches our drive to better ourselves. Why would one study for years to become a neurosurgeon or particle engineer if the pay was based solely on need rather than ability. One could pick up twigs in the forest with five kids and make more than a single surgeon.
In theory, socialism is grand… but eventually you run out of other people's money and then you have to start cutting services. Or, in the case of Venezuela, they have already gone through everybody else's money and were only sustained on the inflated rice of crude oil.
And yes, capitalism isn't all that hot either. Why? Because capitalism without any heart, which is how many humans work it, is very bad for those caught at the bottom and works to crush the middle until there is only a small upper and huge lower class that works to support the mega rich.
What we need to do is find a good blend of these philosophies and make it good for as many as possible.

This is what happens when an authoritarian government makes promises to the masses, destroys the people who build business, the small and large business owners, and then rely on the only resource they have. Had they used their riches to support business growth they'd be in a different place.
Venezuela has the largest oil resource in the whole of the Americas and yet it is in that shape. They allowed their money to be worth nothing and their politics is corrupt to the core. There isn't recovery from this kind of thing unless a major civil war happens or outside intervention.

Venezuela: Anti-government protesters set a man on fire. The video of the incident-which shows an anti-government protester throwing accelerant on the man, who then bursts into flames and runs down the street as other protesters, rather than help douse the fire, let him burn-is horrific.
