The airline says it will let customers concerned about the mosquito-borne virus cancel or postpone their travel without penalty. Blamed for birth defects, the virus is a risk in these countries, the Centers for Disease Control says: Barbados, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Paraguay, Panama, Puerto Rico, Saint Martin, Suriname and Venezuela. CDC increases its emergency operations to Level 1 for Zika
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday that its emergency operations center has been put on a "Level 1" status, its highest level of activation, because of the Zika outbreak. According to the CDC, the center is put on a level 1 activation only during critical emergencies. The CDC has only put its operations center at Level 1 three times in the past: during the Ebola outbreak in 2014; during the H1N1 pandemic in in 2009; and after Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Ref. New survey on American attitudes toward Zika virus finds limited awareness or concern
A surve finds that three-quarters of Americans who have heard at least a little about the Zika virus are aware that the virus is linked to birth defects in babies born to infected mothers. However, the survey found that most Americans are unclear about the availability of tests to diagnose Zika and whether or not preventative vaccines and effective medicines exist to treat it. Ref. Time to be worried. The CDC is saying that Zika is worst than anyone thought for causing many birth defects in pregnant women. If you're pregnant and got bitten by a mosquito or traveled abroad you might want to get checked.
