Senate advances compromise bill to provide $1.1 billion in Zika funding
With the summer mosquito season fast approaching, the Senate voted Tuesday to advance a bipartisan compromise that would provide $1.1 billion to help public health officials battle the Zika virus as it begins to threaten the continental U.S. Senators voted 68-29 to advance an amendment by Sens. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and Patty Murray, D-Wash., to provide the emergency funding, which would be used for mosquito control, public education and the development of a vaccine. The amendment is now attached to an unrelated package of two spending bills that still must be given final approval. Ref. USAToday.
The number of Zika cases among pregnant women in the United States has increased from 48 to 157, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
It's unclear whether the increase is because there are more pregnant women with the virus or because officials are now keeping track of them in a different way -- or a combination of the two.
The report also says there are another 122 pregnant women with “laboratory evidence” of the Zika virus in U.S. Territories. Ref. CNN.

All pregnant women should be assessed for Zika exposure during each prenatal visit
All pregnant women should take steps to prevent mosquito bites, said CDC director Tom Frieden. The mosquito species that spreads Zika, the Aedes aegypti, lives in 30 states, in addition to territories such as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The federal health agency says doctors should ask pregnant women about their travel histories to see if they need to be tested for Zika. Pregnant women who live in or frequently travel to Miami's Wynwood neighborhood, where Zika is spreading, should be tested in the first and second trimester of pregnancy. Ref. USAToday.
