Creating Diseases to Sell More Drugs

A recent issue has come up by the authorities in North America that claim many companies are creating diseases or 'medicalizing' conditions that are often normal in order to create drugs that counteract the supposed effects of these diseases or conditions. What do you think about this? I heard this over the news and do not have any reference for it. It does make you wonder if viruses like SARS is made on purpose just as war is sometimes - to get more money.

After two of my children were forced by their school into getting tested for Chicken Pox, then getting the immunization after the test (if needed), I became firmly convinced of this possibility.

In my opinion, Chicken Pox is a normal childhood disease, that is good for children. It builds up their immune systems, making them much more capable of handling diseases later in life.

Another item I recently read about is how the medical industry (including pharmaceuticals) advise parents to keep their children AWAY from the things that will cause allergies in later life. You know, milk, peanuts, grass, trees, cats, dogs, etc.

But practical experience teaches us that the best way to become immune to a disease or problem is to be exposed to it when we are strong. It makes sense to me that the best way to assure that your child will not be allergic to grass is to play in the grass - their bodies will then become used to the grass. The same with milk, animals, and everything else.

However, that does NOT mean that you should be careless about it. Some people are naturally extremely allergic to peanuts, wheat or milk. If there are any signs of severe reaction, appropriate action must be taken.

Now what does this have to do with the topic? Simply that by assuring that more people will be allergic to more things, the companies can sell lots more allergy medications.

Nice thing to think about. Maybe I need to invest more in the pharmaceutical companies.

JB I think you are more correct than anyone wants to know or admit. These companies are using scare tactics to make cash big cash and our nice family doctors play right along. OK Immunizing for small pox and such is good as they kill guaranteed. Chicken pox you have as good of chance dieing or getting serious side effects from the immunization as you do from the disease! So why bother.

Got kids kick them out side 2 to 4 hours a day it helps! As does hard work ie sweating it does more for you than any drug!.

Good hygiene is the real truth wash wash wash and keep your hands out of your mouth. Allergies yes if serious you can get help but most children have allergies from not being exposed thing when young. Your immune system learns how to respond to disease and condiments so if you are never exposed it learns nothing and you have severe Allergies to every thing!.

Rather off topic, but... Nough said but any interested I do have a awful tasting brew that helps clean you system and boosts immune systems just let me know and I would be glad to share it. It is hundreds of years old and works well for me.

My favorite one of these is for a medicine that cures toenail fungus. You can see it on US television. This is a pretty common, non-life threatening issue that has been around since people started wearing shoes.

Do you really think anyone (except perhaps swimsuit models) were asking for this revolutionary new product? This is definitely medicine being created to create a market purely to make a bundle of cash. I would think that this medicine would be a huge windfall for the producer, since I would expect it less likely that there would be any lawsuits involved with this medicine.

They are making the vaccine for the Bird Flu - I assume when the vaccine is ready - the Bird Flu will be in full force....

I totally agree - the more one protects themselves from the environment the more likely it is to catch a disease, when eventually you mix with the environment

I don't see how certain medicines even make it past the FDA. If you listen to commercials for medications you will hear about the awful side effects in the end or you can read some of them at the bottom. A medicine for seasonal allergies may make you bleed from your stomach (just an example). A few years pass by and you will notice commercials saying if you have taken that medicine you may be eligible to receive money from a settlement because the medicines hurt or killed people. This is why I try to avoid medications. If you take one medicine you might end up having to take another just to help the side effects from the first medicine.

I can believe this and that is a good reason I stay away from drugs as much as possible. I will take pain killers when I get a tooth extracted or some minor surgery for a couple days but that is about it for me. I have found that my body does not get sick much and I am not allergic to anything so far. I have not gotten a flu shot since 1991. I feel I am much more healthy for it too.
