Candy Crush is a ripped-off game that was blatantly stolen from a guy who didn't have the resources to fight for his rights. Ever since I heard the story of just how evil King is, I have boycotted their games. Sadly, they, like other giants such as Zynga who do exactly the same thing, get away with it and flourish. There truly is no justice in the games industry.
When Candy Crush first came out, there were a flurry of articles interviewing the original game designer of a game called Candy Swipe that preceded Candy Crush and looked nearly identical, if not quite as polished. When he confronted King, they lawyered up quickly. I'm a bit busy right now, but I'll try to find the original article. In King's case, they have since resolved the issue (Money was most likely exchanged after King took a beating in the press and the game design community)I think the article I read was in PC Gamer, but I saw similar in other tech sites as well. This is not the only time this has happened so blatantly, either. Zynga did the same thing with a game called Tiny Towers, stealing it with slightly upgraded graphics with their own game called Dream Heights.
Now, I'm not naive. I know things like this happen all the time. Any business exists to make money, certainly, and profit margins have to be built in when much of your usable content is usually free. But it got me pretty upset at the time and I have stuck with my conviction to not use any of that company's products (Or Zynga, for that matter). I'm not telling anyone else what is right or wrong, it's merely my preference.
That's interesting Omnusi. I look forward to you sharing the article with us. The Escapist shared CandySwipe's open letter to King. What I don't understand is why the guy is so upset. His game is clearly a knockoff of Bejeweled, which is a knockoff of Mario Doctor, which is a knockoff of Tetris.
