| Two Mormons were found guilty of child cruelty after forcing six young children to eat fiery chillies when they misbehaved. Deidre Carrington, 41, and Maria Keable, 60, also whipped the bare legs of the youngsters with stinging nettles and hit them with rolling pins. The two women, who met at the Mormon's London Temple of the Church of Jesus and the Latter Day Saints, meted out severe punishments to discipline the children and make them work harder. They were described as "out of control" in torturing the two boys and four girls, aged two to 12. The cruelty also included punching and kicking them around like a football, gagging them, hitting them with wooden spoons, making the eat off a sheet on the floor and eat raw eggs. A jury of nine men and three women found Carrington and Keable guilty of six counts of child cruelty and an assault after five hours of deliberations. They had denied all charges but were unanimously convicted after a two-week trial at Canterbury Crown Court that finished on Wednesday. Carrington and Keable, both dressed all in white with their hair tied up with white hairbands, sat grinning at each other as the verdicts were announced by the jury foreman. During the trial the court heard that Keable, originally from Macedonia, had brainwashed Carrington to join her in beating the youngsters at a house in Ramsgate. Robin Johnson, prosecuting, said the victims were forced to sit up until midnight listening to lectures from Keable. They were then woken at 5am every day, made to say prayers and read scripture, before doing hours of housework. If they did not do their "chores" quickly enough and to a high standard they were punished. Carrington and Keable, who also attended Mormon churches in Deal and Caterbury, would even feed chillies to the youngest victim, a two-year-old baby, if she would not eat. The eldest victim, a boy now aged 13 who cannot be named, gave evidence during the trial by a video link and relived his "years of hell" at the hands of the two women. He said the six friends were often forced to sit in a line on a bed and swallow tablespoons of chilli powder or eat raw chillies when they upset Keable. To make the punishment worse they would sometimes then have to drink a glass of water to make their mouths and throats burn more. The boy said: "We sometimes cried because it was really hot, she would just whack us and give us some more." He was forced to rub stinging nettles up and down the bare legs of the other children when he did his chores perfectly but they failed to do their tasks. The court heard the boy was beaten on a daily basis for years, tied to a bed and gagged, and thrown across the room by the women.... |
