Lack Of White Superstars In The Nba?

Quote from SportsReuters:

QUOTE
AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Reuters) - Hall of Famer Larry Bird says the NBA needs more white stars if it is to continue to appeal to its fan base.....

While Bird had the respect of basketball fans, the former-Celtic felt he was not always respected by opposing coaches when they sent out white players to guard him.......

A report in the Chicago Tribune, however, said that of the 408 players in the NBA last season, 76.5 were black

Most of the white superstars in the NBA today are from foreign countries such as Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash and Peja Stojakovic. Since the days of Bird and McHale, there has been a noticeable shortage of American bred white superstars. Do you think this is a problem in the league? Is this a normal statistic for a sport that has mostly black participation? Does this type of comment make Larry Bird a racist?

Well this certainly is an interesting topic that can become so full of speculation, but I will thrown it a bob and see what it does. First of all I want to know who Bird believes is the fan base? Does he mean that more white folk are interested in basketball and therefore want to see white players? At the same time his point about white players guarding him shows that he thinks black players are better? I believe that the black players in the USA are already fighting stigma from birth, when they make it big, they really go for it, but, let us keep in mind that the African race has excelled in sports to a magnificent degree, genetically they are one of the most athletically blessed people on earth.

Most of the people who pay the money to go to NBA basketball games on a regular basis are primarily white, upper to middle class folks. This I believe is what Bird is referring too as the 'fan base'. I also believe with a lot of young, hard, unrefined black Americans entering the league like Iverson, Artest and K-Mart, Bird is looking for some balance with the preppy, educated white athletes. Not to say that there aren't preppy black players, and thug white players, just that the numbers favor the opposite.
With respect to his comment about having white players guard him when he was in the league, I have to agree with him there, because, the really good players were usually black, and out of respect for Bird's ability, he should have been guarded by the opponents best players. This is probably why he was so successful because he was so dominating over the players that they put on him. No one can ignore the fact that basketball is dominated by black players, and they are a very gifted group of people athletically speaking. I don't think the NBA should be adopting a form of affirmative action to get more white players in the league, if there are more talented black players who will be shunned because of it.

While we are talking about white basketball players can I ask you guys what you think about Anthony Bogut, the young Aussie rookie? I don't get to see much of him over here, how good is this kid?

Here is his profile page on the NBA website.

Arvhic, he has good potential, but isn't NBA caliber yet. He was highly regarded and did play all 82 games for the Bucks, but being drafter #1, he only scored 20 points or more twice this season. I believe though that he is a better rebounder and defensive player, and this has helped the Bucks to at least reach the playoffs. If he can improve his offense, he should be a dominant center in the league.
