During a raid we found two men and one female. One of the guys was catatonic, the other had been beaten bloody on the soles of his feet and the rest of him was bruised and battered, the woman couldn't stand on her own and was covered in lesions.

I imagine Betancourt's experience was less than pleasant, but she came out far better than some. If she can walk she's in relatively good condition.

I really hope this lady and all the other hostages are released before Christmas, what a terrible thing is to spend six years of your life in captivity.

The Colombian rebel group Farc has cautiously welcomed French President Nicolas Sarkozy's offer to broker the release of 45 Farc-held hostages.

Mr Sarkozy is particularly keen to secure the release of Ingrid Betancourt, a Colombian politician who also holds French citizenship.

Last week, Ms Betancourt was shown looking thin and haggard in a video seized by Colombian authorities.

Mr Sarkozy's offer was also applauded by Colombian President Alvaro Uribe.

"As president of France, Sarkozy demands Ingrid Betancourt's liberation and as Colombian citizens we too should fight for all the hostages and for an end to kidnappings," Mr Uribe said.

"The world which has felt great pain over the photos of Ingrid Betancourt should know that the Colombian people have suffered the same pain for 50 years and they have the right to overcome it," Mr Uribe said.

"The world should understand that this is how the Farc bandits do politics, using terror which is the only political tool they have left."

Guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) have been fighting the Colombian state since the early 1960s.

In an internet statement, Farc described Mr Sarkozy's initiative as praiseworthy, but warned that international mediation can only succeed if it is impartial.

Ms Betancourt - who has French nationality through a former marriage - was kidnapped by Farc in 2002 while campaigning for the Colombian presidency.

She was one of 45 high-profile hostages whose freedom Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez tried to secure in exchange for about 500 imprisoned Farc guerrillas.

The exchange bid was strongly supported by relatives of rebel hostages, but collapsed after the Colombian president accused Mr Chavez of breaking an agreement.

The end of the mediation attempt was lamented at the time by Mr Sarkozy, and early on Thursday he made a direct appeal to Farc chief Manuel Marulanda to free Ms Betancourt.

"I do not share your ideas and I condemn your methods," Mr Sarkozy said in the message broadcast on French television.

"I ask you solemnly to release Ingrid Betancourt and not carry on your conscience the risk that her departure would bring," he said.

"I have a dream: to see Ingrid with her family this Christmas," Mr Sarkozy said.

Thanks to Chavez's intervention three hostages would be freed within 24 hours. Will the US acknowledge this at all?

QUOTE
(CNN) -- -- President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela said Wednesday that three hostages held by Colombian rebels could be freed with hours.

Chavez said his forces had airplanes and helicopters ready to retrieve the hostages at a moment's notice.

His government delivered a letter to Colombian leaders detailing the proposal, he said. Soon after, CNN confirmed the Colombia government had agreed to the deal.

The hostages have been held for several years by the left-wing Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as the FARC for its Spanish acronym.

On Wednesday, Chavez stood before a map showing Venezuela and Colombia and pointed out several airports on the Venezuelan side of the frontier where the freed hostages could arrive.

He said he had considered options for a clandestine operation, but decided that would be too risky.

Hostages who could be freed include Clara Rojas, who was kidnapped in 2002 while she managed the campaign of Sen. Ingrid Betancourt, a candidate for the Colombian presidency, Chavez said. They also include Rojas' son, Emmanuel, who was born in captivity, and Consuelo Gonzalez, a former Colombian congressman, he said...

From the very first time I heard FARC was willing to release hostages, I had my doubts. Why after all these years they would do something like that? Everybody is blaming Uribe (Colombian President) because the rumours say that his military was all around the area where this people were supposed to be released, I am not so sure about that.

He states that the reason the FARC did not release the hostages is because they do not have the 4 years old boy who was born in captivity as they claim but there is a boy who is in foster care right now from the same area who was found malnourished, abused and with a skin condition that is common in someone who has been in a jungle for long periods of time. Uribe wants to do a DNA test on this child.
