FDA: YOU'RE EATING CRUSHED BUG JUICE

That ice cream you're eating or the lipstick you're wearing just might contain extract from crushed bugs. On purpose.

Carmine puts the red in ice cream, strawberry milk, fake crab and lobster, fruit cocktail cherries, port wine cheese, lumpfish eggs and liqueurs like Campari, according to the FDA. Carmine is also used in lipstick, makeup base, eye shadow, eyeliners, nail polishes and baby products, the agency said. Meanwhile, cochineal extract shows up in fruit drinks, candy, yogurt and some processed foods.

Well, I could have seriously gone without knowing this. Really, did I need to know the strawberry yogurt in my fruit smoothie is insect based? YUK! But you know, thanks for ruining it for everyone, I will now have to check to see if their are any bugs used in my food, which I probably won't eat despite the fact that I know I like its taste.

Crushed Bug Juice Health & Special Psychology

Mmm...Yummy. There is nothing I love more in the morning than some eggs, biscuits, and chopped flies.

I guess it's really hard for me to get grossed out, and while this makes me cringe slightly, I doubt it will change the things in my diet. I might look at the ingrediants out of curiosity, but I don't foresee myself taking strawberry ice cream out of my diet.

This is interesting! I knew the color "carmine" but didn't realize it came from crushed bug bodies. That's disgusting!

Offtopic but,
Sort of offtopic, but not really: There are actually allowable limits to insect and other vermin "debris" in all manufactured foods. Apparently, there isn't any way to completely eradicate mice/rats/bugs from manufacturing plants. And therefore, you will have some residue in the food manufacturing process. Yes ~~ ALL manufactured food.

What level of control is required? Often where food preparation is concerned or with vectors of disease, zero tolerance is demanded (I.e. control must be absolute). Sometimes, even though this may be desirable, economic considerations may dictate some tolerance. https://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:othbiD...lient=firefox-a

It is a well known fact that most processed foods have an allowable level of filth. No food is perfect or completely clean. Articles like these try to dissuade consumers from purchasing certain products, but if we were to worry about individual products, then we would probably not eat anything ever again.
