Blu-ray And Hd Dvd

HD DVD has been upcoming for years as the research has progressed. Blu-ray has even been in production for nearly as long. I found during a few simple discussions with other techs that few people had really learned any of the technology behind either of them. Posted here is a short article giving a shimmer of light towards which option will win out in the end.

*Cheaper HD DVD? or more advanced Blu-ray?

Blu-Ray has a serious problem, its WAY to exspensive for the average burner! I can use blue ray on my DVD burner, but the disks are almost 10 dollars a disk. Why would I not shrink my dvd to fit a regular dvd as opposed to using a blu-ray? If you don't have a larger TV that supports the higher quality then the blu-ray doesn't do you any good.

PCWorld reports that:

First Blu-ray Burner Lives Up to the Hype

It seems impressive that on a single layer of a blu-ray disc you can pack 25 gb of data. This article suggests that in a rush by Pioneer to have this recorder on the market they left a few things to be desired such as the ability to burn CD's as well as utilize the dual layer BR 50 GB discs. The burner does however have the red optical laser for reading and writing DVDs. I do not believe I would see these as a shortfall in the least. First reason that is is because without a trial run on the market why would they wish to invest the money in integrating the dual layer technology just in case this did not go over on the consumer market. Second is wish the speed and capacity of DVD and now Blu-Ray how often are we really going to be burning CDs? And even then standard CD burners are selling for less than 35$ US. Why spend an additional 100$ US on this burner so it can do the same thing?

I bought a dual layer blue ray this pay check. I really wanted to see its quality benefits. I was able to burn the entire matrix dvd on one disk with no compression. I was really impressed. Problem was that the disk was a generic blue ray and still cost me 7.99 plus tax. Thats very expensive for my tastes. As soon as the disks come down in price, this will be the next used disk, its just to much storage on one small disk to ignore, I love it!

In a recent article the two units were compared in a slightly different perspective. It was mentioned that while both units can read a standard DVD they cannot read media from one another. This forces everything to either be sold in two different formats but as history proves one of the two formats will prevail, the question is which one?

Wow, has it even been decided which format +R or =R will prevail? I think in the end Blu-Ray will be the accepted standard. HD DVD just sounds like its mostly for HDTV's even though I wouldn't be using it for that. So my vote is for Blu-Ray. What about yours Bwren, you didn't put your vote in.

I did not realize that I did not add my vote to my last post. I am going to back Sony on this one and support Blu-Ray all the way. An additional 20 Gigs worth of data onto a disc, if even the disk costs near 10$ US is more than worth it. Just imagine the cost of a tape backup in comparison.

I haven't looked into Blu Ray myself, and have been waiting on DVD burning capabilities simply because there was not a standard yet. It sounds like BluRay will end up being the standard. Does it require a special burner, and is so what are the costs and requirements for this burner? Thanks!
