The Marlins have had the unlucky fortune of having been dismantled not once but twice. Both times were after World Series Championships. The first happened in 1997 when the likes of Edgar Renteria, Gary Sheffield, Bobby Bonilla and Craig Counsel were shipped off the very next year after winning the World Series. Now most recently in 2003, the same happened again. Gone were Ivan Rodriguez, Carlos Delgado, Josh Beckett, Carl Pavano, Luis Castillo, Derek Lee and Juan Pierre. About all that is left from the 2003 winning team is Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis. The Marlins have started the 2006 season a dismal 5-11 which is good for last place in the strong NL East division. Can they do the impossible a third time and win yet another World Series championship?
Did you just call them unfortunate? I would love to be the city at the end of two dismantlements due to world series wins. Most small market teams cannot put together one good team, none the less do it twice. My hats off their ability to consistently rebuild winning teams.
Yes, this is very true. It also shows what a strong farm system they have where they can continually bring up fresh young talent and create winning ball clubs. I was just watching them play the Cubs last night, and Joe Girardi, although he was miffed that they ended up losing the game, had to be somewhat pleased at the effort they put forward being such a young team and going against such a veteran team like the Cubs.
There has been a lot of discomfort in south Florida since the World Series. Not only did they get dismantled but were turned down for a new stadium. This means they will have to continue playing in Pro Player Stadium. The owner of this ball club is an idiot and should be shot by a firing squad. He reminds me of the woman owner in the movies "Major League", who does not want the team to succeed and they weren't supposed to go as far as they did. In 2003 I actually fell into the "fan club trap", where I actually went to games and rooted for them. If I would have known they were going to dismantle the team a second time, I would not have gone to games or bought into the belief the team could actually do it. I don't see how they even have any faithful fans. It disgusts me to the core and I will no longer be a Florida fan no matter how well they do. They should dismantle the team all together or move them to another city, because I don't want them tainting the area I live in any more. I'm glad I got to vent about this.
The Miami Marlins have suspended manager Ozzie Guillen for five games, effective immediately, the team said Tuesday.
Guillen sparked a firestorm when he told Time magazine recently that he respected Fidel Castro for being able to lead Cuba for six decades.
Guillen is expected to apologize for his comments at a news conference this morning in Miami. Ref. CNN
