Women In Baseball

This recent story made me think about women and their role(s) in Major League Baseball.

Hernandez admonished by network for 'inappropriate' remarks

QUOTE
NEW YORK -- Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez was reprimanded by the team's television network for "inappropriate" remarks during a broadcast about a female member of San Diego's training staff.

The former MVP first baseman said women "don't belong in the dugout" when he spotted 33-year-old Kelly Calabrese, the Padres' full-time massage therapist, high-fiving Mike Piazza in the dugout after he hit a home run during New York's 8-1 victory Saturday in San Diego.

Now, I didn't hear the comment in context, but I wouldn't doubt that it was taken out of context. I am watching a Cubs-Marlins game right now, and other than the fans, the only other women involved are some of the on-the-field reporters, like Erin Andrews. Baseball has traditionally been a guy sport, what with all the crotch-scratching, spitting and chewing that guys usually partake in.
There is currently not a baseball league for women, but they do participate in fast-pitch where the ball is thrown underhanded. Do you think there is a place for women in Major League Baseball, whether it be in the dugout, on the field, or possibly in their own league?

My feeling is this, she didn't belong in the dug out period. She is not a player or coach, and not other people are in the dug out. Its during the game and she should not be there, not because she is a woman, but because she is not an active part of the game. I think the comment is valid, but the words used were wrong for that time.

Why shouldn't she be in the dugout? She is the full-time massage therapist for the team. Players get attended too many times during a game whether it be a cramp, or stiffness. A lot of times they go into the locker room, but only for serious injuries. Other times, they get attended too right in the dugout. She is a part of the team, because the Padres isn't only about the players but also the coaches and training staff. Hernandez' comments were way out of line, in my opinion.
