Look out, the Colorado Rockies are in 1st place in the NL West. In the franchise's 13 year history, they have never won the division, and only have a lone playoff appearance in 1995, when they came in as a Wild Card. They currently own a 13-10 record and all without their best player, Todd Helton. He has had a stomach ailment since 4/22, but that has not slowed down the Rocky Mountain team. A big part of their being in first place is the lackluster play from the rest of the teams in the division. However, my belief is that the Giants and Dodgers will find themselves back at the top of the division, and sadly, the Rockies will once again be on the outside looking in.
Something else you didn't point out was that the Rockies tend to start strong and finish poorly. While this is obviously a different team, they seem primed to repeat history as like you pointed out, the other teams in their division have played under what most consider their ability. However, they are at least a team to watch since the rest of the division is chasing them. If you have watched the Rockies in the past, then look for the signs. Around mid-year, they usually go on a short skid, losing all three or three of four games to a close division opponent. After that, they start going down hill and end up not making the playoffs.
You may be right, Konq, but it really makes you wonder if this is the year they can sustain their good play of late. They recently swept the Astros which was impressive in its own right. The starting pitching is the best I have seen in years. We'll just have to wait and see.
