The system of education in Trinidad is more rigid and less flexible towards children with other talents besides Mathematics and English. However, the new Minister of Education wants to change this so we will see what is in store for us.

What does a school year look like, for instance, time in school and off time? In America the law requires 180 days, but school systems determine how those day fit into a year. Can a high school student choose some of the courses he/she will take? When are the children tracked? How important is this SEA test in the determination of placement. Is other criteria used. I have so many questions, so can someone steer me to a phone # or website. The embassy in Washington gave conflicting information and there was a breakdown of communication because of language.

School year starts in September, breaks for 2-3 weeks in December, then continues in January and breaks again for Easter (2 weeks). After Easter they continue until the end of June and then get a 2 month vacation (July and August). Similar to the USA.

Yes, but it is very limited. There are more choices in the USA but here (Public schools) it is more rigid. You may have more options in a private school. Here is the Primary School Curriculum or the Secondary you can look through.

Very important if you want your child to get into a certain school. Schooling here is not by zone so you have children traveling long hours over many miles to attend a 'better' school than what might be available in their own area.

Yes, but don't expect a lot of variety. In the first three years of high school, all the subjects are compulsory. In the fourth year, they're able to choose the subjects they would like to take (Math and English are still compulsory). Some of the subjects they can choose: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, French, Principles of Business, Principles of Accounts, Spanish, Food and Nutrition, Add Math, History and Social Studies.

You mean tested? During a term, there are usually 2 or 3 exams and at the end of the year, they also have exams for each subjects covering the entire academic year.

You mean, the accent? Because English is our official language.
