Adjusting To A New Home

Has anyone ever moved to a new house and brought their pet with them? If so, was the transition for the pet a smooth one? Was there anything special you did to make your pet feel like the new house was his/her home also? Please share your experiences with us.

Home New To Adjusting

I have had pets my entire life and they always moved with us. Three years ago we moved into our current residence but did not have a pet. However, we have three pets, all came from other places. One from another home, one from outside, one from the pet store. Both of the cats had a little bit of a time getting used to it. We let them hide and had some treats ready for them when they came out. I found it best to let them adjust on their own. As for our ferret, when he came home from the pet store, you would have thought he was born at our house. He took to it immediately.

We have moved house 3 times in the last 5 years, and each time we put butter on the cats feet,before we let her out, they are supposed to be able to track their way home, from the scent from the butter-- don't know whether it's just an old wives tale, or whether we've got an intelligent cat, but at any rate, it worked

Our dogs, when we moved, we had already decided where they would be sleeping, so before we brought the dogs in, we moved their beds in to the spot where they would sleep, and we left one of their toys there, and their bowls of food and water ready for them.

When the dogs ran in for the first time, they go straight for their food, and they are that busy concentrating on that, by the time they have fed, they already feel at home.

It certainly worked for us, and at any rate, I would think that it is less distressing for the animals to feel straight at home.

Home New To Adjusting

I have moved several different times over the years with a number of different pets. The first was a Beagle puppy. She did not have any trouble at all adjusting to the new house. Any of the three times that she moved with me. She was always rather calm anyway and was comfortable as long as I was around. This may have also had something to do with the four hour car ride on the original move. The next pet that I moved with was yet another Beagle puppy but this one was male. He did have a little harder time adjusting to the new house. He was not sure about exploring the house much on his own but rather follow me around to check everything. In the new house he also spent more time outside as it had a much large fenced yard that he was also not used to. My four current Labs that I have did not have much trouble at all. The first one we brought home was Monty, he was a little slow to explore but it only took a few days for him to loosen up completely. The other three we brought home at the same time from the animal shelter and already had one puppy here. They took to the new house like a dream other than the fact they could not understand why I kept getting onto them for messing in the floor. They started off when we brought them home as inside dogs in the evening but it is hard to housebreak three at a time so now they pretty well live outside except for the occasional trip in for a treat. The latest animal brought into our home was a stray cat. He actually just came in officially tonight. I brought him in on Sunday when he kept coming up to the front windows and appeared to have not eaten for near a week as he was more bone than anything else. I put him back out after he ate because I have never been a big cat person. Cherry was somewhat upset that he was not outside an hour later when she checked. I assured her that he would show back up because we fed him. She has been sad since. He showed back up tonight when we were on our way to the store for a few things so she brought him in to feed him again. I do not believe he has eaten since I fed him Sunday. I bought a litter box and some dry food for him at the store because Cherry really wants an animal inside the house and really feels sorry for this cat. He has had no trouble at all adjusting to the indoors which makes me believe that he has been indoors before. (I believe that he was most likely dumped on the highway not far from here.) He has really loved exploring the house and seems to have no problems at al. He even attempted to help me type this by sitting on the keyboard near half way into my story.
