Unusual Traditions of Mothers
Did your Mother have an Unusual Tradition that was enforced in your home? If so, what was it? You may also discuss Mothering Traditions in other countries.
My mother always makes swedish meatballs on fathers day. I don't really know why, its not my dads favorite meal. She still makes it and we come over for fathers day. So now its made for me and my dad. Its funny because she really hates making it, but insists on doing it.
My grandmother makes shrimp for Thanks giving in memory of my grandfather who died over twenty years ago. She stopped serving turkey and started with the shrimp the year after he died.
My own Mum didn't and still doesn't have any funny traditions, whereas, my Mother-in-law, when it came round to Shrove Tuesday (pancake day here in the UK), the day after is known as Ash Wednesday, she has always cooked potato Hash for this, and my Husband has carried on the tradition for our family too.
I tried to point out that it is Ash Wednesday, not Hash Wednesday, but no-one wants to know, they enjoy their food too much to let something as small as that discrepancy get in their way!
When I was a little girl my grandmother was fascinating with our hair, she would make all sort of fancy hairstyles but what is unusual about her tradition is that she would pick up all sort of weird plants from our backyard (she knew all the names) boil it and wash our hair with that water! (that by the way was rainy water, she would collect water just for that purpose) She said it made the hair shine even more, I never noticed it although most people always complimented our hair when we were kids and when we started taking care of our own hair, she would lecture us why is not shinning as much as when she used to do it. THAT was a weird tradition.
