STUDY: COMPANIES SNOOPING ON EMPLOYEE E-MAIL
Big Brother is not only watching but he is also reading your e-mail.

My perspective is that company email belongs to the company, not the individual. If the individual wants to include personal or explicit information in an email, then they should be using their personal email programs. I believe Bwren has mentioned he is involved in such activity at his job, so he may be able to add some more perspective to this.
Personally, I refrain from using my company email for personal use. It has worked well for me so far. I know of many coworkers who have been attacked by spam and viruses because they use their work email for both personal and company business. I don't have a problem with my company reading my emails, because really I refrain from sending information that I would want hidden or unknown. I just believe this is a best practice for individuals as it saves the company and themselves a lot of extra work and possible humiliation.
