Have you ever used the utility ERD Commander? This was once sold as a stand alone product but is now solely included with the Administrator's Pak by Winternals. For a full description of features included within the Administrator's Pak as well as specifics on ERD Commander follow the inclosed link. The basics that ERD commander provides as a product is the ability to boot a PC to the CD with a graphical interface to preform repairs to files, settings, registry entries, passwords, and much more. The most appropriate features that I find useful are the locksmith add-on which allows you to boot to the CD and change any windows system password such as the administrator password without the knowledge of the previous password. This is also a very easy way to backup files from a failed system without removing the hard drive. This is especially important since a standard boot disk will not allow you to read an NTFS partition. This product is based around features included within Windows and that makes this a much needed add on to any technicians software collection.

I didn't even know this existed, thanks for the heads up. As an Administrator on our Windows machines (client windows machines, not infrastructure) I had access to these utilities and didn't know it. I usually use HP's ILO on our blade servers because its a console program. ERD commander gave me the unique ability to use a GUI and still boot into what is essentially safe mode, but appears to launch before that. I found it useful when one of our machines wouldn't boot after a new patch was installed and the test box failed.
