In 2003, the Detroit Tigers almost set a record in futility, posting a win-loss record of 43-119. This year, they aim to do much better, and have started off with a bang. At 11-7, they are rivaling World Series champs Chicago White Sox for the lead of the AL Central division. Chris Shelton already has 9 HR's and 18 RBI's and contributions for Carlos Guillen and Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez are helping the Tigers on their way to a post-season berth. Time will tell if the Tigers have been rejuvenated or whether they will return to their old ways.
The Tigers had the most wins of any AL team and the second highest winning percentage up to the 1993 season. After that, they have had one horrible year after another. When I was younger, they used to be the dominant team in my division, but now, they are at the bottom of the heap with the likes of my team, the Royals. This year looks to be better, though they have not had the hardest part of their schedule yet.
The Detroit Tigers are surprisingly, only 1/2 game out of first behind the White Sox. They have really come around this year, both with hitting and pitching. Chris Shelton already has 10 HR's for the year, and the 5 starting pitchers have accounted for 18 of their 20 wins. Their series in early June with the White Sox will be an interesting one to watch.
