The Reds have made a surprising run recently to catapult them into first place, in what is becoming a very tough NL Central division. At 16-7, they only enjoy a 1/2 game lead over Houston. The biggest question in Cincinnati these days is whether Ken Griffey Jr. can return to the team after going on the disabled list AGAIN.
Griffey still not ready to come off disabled list

CINCINNATI -- Ken Griffey Jr. took batting practice, ran in the outfield and caught fly balls on Friday. The one thing he didn't do was come off the disabled list. For their part, the Reds are willing to be patient with a 36-year-old outfielder who has a history of season-scuttling leg injuries. Griffey is on the disabled list for the eighth time in his seven seasons with Cincinnati. |
How good is a player really if he only plays half the time? I don't what the problem is, but Griffey good have been much better in his career if he had not been injured so much. And then the question that begs to be asked is "are the reds better off without him?". The reason this question is valid is because if they didn't have him, they could get another player who could consistently play and develop consistency that Griffey doesn't have.
The Cincinnati Reds, on a 10-2 surge recently, has found themselves in first place in the NL Central. All of this without the ailing Ken Griffey Jr. To answer your question Konq, it shows how good he is a player, because he hasn't played that much. If he had played more, imagine what his numbers would be like? I do however think the Reds are a better team without him, and this recent streak proves that.
Much agreed Male, at 20-9 now, the Reds are a serious force to be reckoned with. The papers in Cinci seem to think that they need Griffey back, but thats usually the way with super stars. I think that the Reds have players now learning how to perform better because they don't have Griffey to fall back on.
The Reds were brought back down to the earth tonight, losing to the Nationals 7-1. The pitching staff gave up 5 HR's to 4 different batters. To give credit where credit is due, Armas Jr. pitched a web of a game with 2 hits, 1 ER and 4 strikeouts. Griffey Jr. should be joining the team very soon as well, so we will see what, if any, effect his return has on the team's winning ways.
