Consider the following scriptures...

"And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons shall be for the Lord by thy estimation. And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary. And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels. And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver. And if it be from sixty years old and above, if it be a male, then thy estimation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female, ten shekels" (Leviticus 27:1-7)

Why are men, no matter the age always 'worth' more than women?

I think it may have a relationship with the double uncleanness that the women go through during childbirth and that's why the "devaluation"of the woman. Another theory is that since children were given the lowest values is because may be the scripture is refering to the ability to perform physically (labor). Vows were always considered "compulsory" so if redemption did not take place, the person becomes a "slave" of the sanctuary and he might be redeemed at a valuation according to age and sex, on the scale given in (Leviticus 27:1-7).

I think people put to much into this scripture without knowing our society today. In court, if there is a wrongful death suite, a male is worth the most money. Women then children follow next. The premise is where their place is in society, what they give to society. Since women didn't work back in biblical days and usually didn't when the standards were set in todays society, they are monetarily worth less than men, but more than children. It may not be a correct principle, but it at least makes sense.

Women in the Old Testament were worth less because because the God of the Jews intended it to be that way.

Sara, Thamar, and the daughters of Lot, took matters into their own hands and changed their world to suit themselves. Sara browbeat Abraham, Thamar fooled her intended husband's father, and the daughters of Lot got their father drunk. Most women were beat, raped, sold, ignored, mistreated, run out of camp, and left out of the temple leadership, as well as day to day decisions. A very few overcame all this, but they all had to go over, or around some man in their lives to do it.
